Default Cell Phone Users

Mods: I didn't know if this should go here or the Off Topic forum so I took a shot. Please move it if you feel it's better suited there.
________________________________________________

For the past couple of weeks when I'm making my daily commute and while running errands on the weekend I've been counting off vehicles in lots of 100 and seeing how many drivers out of that 100 are on cell phones. It's a very rough & unscientific poll of course and my numbers don't take into account hands free users.

After all of my low tech research I've came up with a result that 28% of the drivers I meet (on two lane roads) here in the Birmingham, AL area have cell phones stuck to their heads. Which in turn means over 1/4 of the drivers I meet are only giving 1/2 of their attention to not running over me. And, while I don't have an exact breakdown (it's hard enough to keep a vehicle/cell user count in my head and stay safe so I didn't specifically note gender) but well over half of those on the phone are women.

I'd be interested to see some numbers from other areas if anyone wants to give it a shot. And if you're interested in coming up with something - pay attention to YOUR driving too. It gets a little challenging at times trying to drive, count vehicles and see if the driver is on the phone or not.

Hello my name is Paris and I am a recovering cell phone talker, driver.
Actually, sarcasm aside, I am seriously tired of seeing it as well. I DO NOT talk, text, or in any other way utilize my cell phone unless I am pulled over safely. Most people do not know, as for my insurance company, if you are involved in an accident and shown to have been on the cell phone, your policy won't guarantee repairs or pay out. Our military installations have banned the use of electronic devices while on posts and can carry hefty fines. I try not to be the moral police, but so help me if someone hits me or my children while on a cell phone it will take all that I have not to inflict pain....
So after my soapbox moment and generating a 7 hour response, SURE I'd love to help.
What're the details? Only monitor for a hour?...Only certain hours?...etc etc

I just got a pretty sweet bluetooth that "if" I talk in my truck, it keeps me focused on driving. I have also thought about the bluetooth radios.
But I will start looking on my way to and from work for tonight, and tomorrow and report back.
Oh last night while driving home this teenager was getting pulled over, looked like because of no seatbelt, but she was still going down the road talking on a cell phone.

Well here in Ontario its illegal now to talk on your cell phone or text while driving. It does not stop anyone though haha. I see people left right and center with the phone stuck to their heads.

It did cut the amount of people with cell phones stuck to their heads, but there is a lot of people still. Now everyone is supposed to use the Bluetooth set ups.

Tell me about it. I was hoping that more people would take this new law seriously, just today i saw somebody trying to back out of a parking spot, and doing a terrible job at it. Then i spotted it. She had a cell phone stuck to her head

OT: Also just noticed your location - its a very small world!

I'll have to keep an eye out for your truck

It's illegal in Oregon now too starting on Jan 1st and they've actually been nailing people on it in my area. Something like 70 last week and the biggest town in my county is 15,000 people or so lol.

Only 28%! Consider yourself lucky, here in South Florida La-La land, I bet the number is closer to 50%. Seriously, I've never seen the sheer number of distracted drivers as we have down here. Even cops are frequently seen hauling @$$ with a cell phone glued to their ear. It drives me absolutely bat-guano.

The mobile communications industry has a lobby nearly as powerful as big tobacco, and probably more so these days. There is HUGE money in this, and they have a vested interest in keeping folks' ability to stay on the line as long as possible. The lobbyists convince key members of congress every year that not only is the problem not as bad as everyone says it is, but that it is a fundamental right for people to stay connected as much as they would like. Of course, you'll never get a congressman to say that in public, all of them are "opposed" to texting while driving publicly. Check their voting record on laws that restrict usage of mobile devices while driving.

Remember though, it's not just phones/texting that cause the problem. The iPOD can be just as bad. So many cars have iPOD interfaces in them now, yet many still attempt to control their music via that little 2.5" screen (ok, 3x5 on an iPOD Touch). It's tough enough to see the screen on the couch, now put it in a car traveling 65-75 mph. Talk about distracting!

That's not to mention folks reading books, applying makeup, shaving, eating their breakfast, even having that morning cup of coffee (which I'm guilty of). Ever had a hot cuppa joe dumped in your lap on the freeway? Think THAT might be distracting?

The best thing to do is:

1. Don't participate yourself. Either turn your phone/ringer off, or if it rings, pull over. Even using the vaunted Bluetooth can prove distracting. Think about a heated discussion, and how much you got into one. Do you REALLY want to become that distracted on the road?

2. Drive defensively. If you see someone driving distracted, give way. Let them merge, let them pass, whatever. It's not worth your life to prove a point. Really, it's just not.

I'm an advocate of motion sensitve devices to disable phones/pagers/ sidekicks while in motion, although I know that would preclude a passenger from using one. There has to be a better way, and laws prohibiting the use of them might be a start, but it's tough to enforce.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Not only driving- I work with people whose phones are going off constantly(I'll cut some slack to the parents of latchkey kids). One of the wife's coworkers is on the phone with her hubby as soon as she gets to work(she just left him a few minutes ago!). And most of the conversations are totally inane. Probably the same with conversations while driving. What's with the need for constant communication these days?

BTW- it's been shown through brain scans, that even with bluetooth/handsfree talking, your brain is still not on the road as much as you might like to think.
