turbo392, I completely agree that turbo lag is just a problem from years ago. With today's tech a 5.7 HEMI would spool a pair of 57mm turbos or one 76mm almost instantly. I never asked the OP what gears he had so that would play a part in getting the turbo to load.

I wouldn't be surpised to see 475rwhp from a conservative custom tuned setup set to 8-9psi and the torque curve would be nice and flat starting around 3k rpms.

I like both superchargers and turbos, but I like the superchargers more. Theres nothin like the whine of a supercharger

Whoops forgive me guys, fingers got ahead of the brain, happens from time to time, I'd been thinking of the Kennebell gimme a break, i've been working 14 hour days for the last 2 weeks and am a bit squirley. As for the turbo lag, I'm so used to working with turbo diesels that I'm so used to a big lag when pushing 50+ psi I just expect it in every application.

For the limitations of the bottom end, 500 crank HP is a conservative number, and this would be a good time to start looking at upgrading your tranny anyway, and a good time to tear into you engine and get some forged or cryo'd internals and a new set of pistons, maybe upping the compression a bit.

Cd, no harm no foul. I just wanted him to get good info. People can debate the s/c vs t/c forever but in the end he'll have a grin from ear to ear with either.

Ok fill me in on this question sorry not jacking the thread

I don't have anthing done to my truck except wheels tires, and a predator and exhaust. I tow a bassboat to and from tournaments A LOT! I am trying to decide if I want to do a supercharger or turbo? But I am not going to if I have to rebuild tranny and other engine parts. I had a 07 cummins and I know how all these things fall in a line with a diesel, but not so much with a gas engine. Will the tranny be able to stand up with the supercharger or turbo while towing??? How much more hp will I be looking at? Im most curious to know if it will help keep the tranny from shifting on minor to major hills as much as it does now due to the increase in HP?

Superchargers will give you the low wnd grunt you're wanting for towing. Turbo's are nice but i'd rather be BLOWN!

Most intercooled 'chargers will give you a 40-50% gain over stock HP. You'll get more if you upgrade the top end, but simply bolting on a 'charger won't require a tranny rebuild, you could get a higher stall torque converter, but not a requirement. As for towing, you should get better shifting since there's more torque behind the tranny now and won't have to downshift as soon to keep the RPMs up.

If you do a lot of driving, I highly recommend getting a turbocharger or an oil tapped supercharger (not a self contained one) since you'd be swapping out the oil quite regularly in the charger, and it's expensive if you use the stuff they recommend.

Here's the list that I follow for build up a driveline (most experience with diesels)

<500HP <600ft-lbs tq

stock drivetrain is adequate
suggest upgrading to a 2500RPM stall torque converter

>500HP <800HP <900ft-lbs tq
tripleloq ATS torque converter
billet flywheel(flex plate)
basic transmission overhaul kit
billet input shaft
transmission cooler + deep belly pan

800+HP, 900+ft-lbs tq
fivestar torque converter
billet flywheel (flexplate)
master transmission overahul kit (clutches + more)
billet input/output shafts
valve body
tranny cooler + deep belly pan.
