Default Quad cab door

I am new to this forum but have been a member of the Nitro forum for a couple of years. I have found them to be very helpful and am looking forward to having much the same experience with this forum!

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Sport Quad cab. The rear door on the drivers side has always been a little difficult to open, but has at least worked. However, recently when I tried opening it, it will not release. I am guessing that I have to replace or repair the mechanism inside the door but I don't know how to open it to do so.

Has anyone esle had this issue...and if so, what steps did you take to resolve it. While this is not the end of the world, it is annoying that I have to go to the other side in order to make use of the back seat or storage area. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Bob

Hey Bob...does the mechanism handle move?

If so, can you hear it release the closure mechanism or does the handle just flop around, moving nothing?

If so, it sounds like the linkage inside the door is fubar.

Remove the inner door panel, operate the handle and inspect the linkage as you operate it.

I don't have a service manual for the 2001 QC otherwise I'd make up a document for ya. Maybe someone else here does and can give you some written instructions with pics to follow.

Maddog, the handle still feels connected, but just acts like it doesn't move enough to release the door. As I said, it has always been somewhat hard to open. Usually, you had to pull harder on the handle than the other side just to get it opened. Is it possible that it has a cable rather than a rod for the linkage? It acts as though a cable has stretched and now won't release the latches.

Getting the door panel off would be a lot easier if I could get the door open but that doesn't seem to be an option at this point.

Well, I finally figured out how to get the door open by removing the handle. Once that was done, I was able to reach in through the hole and pull the connecting rods for both top and bottom latch. That will allow me to open the door and get to the door panel.

Now I need some advice on taking off the panel. I assume it is held on with clips. Any suggestions on what tool or method is best to avoid damaging the panel?

Any directions, pictures or whatever will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!!
