Angry P1740 Error Code

I have a 2000 Dodge RAM 1500 V8 Magnum. I have had a crack in the transmission housing where it connects to the transfer case. It doesn't leak and has been there for over 80,000 miles. I get an error code P1740. When I clear it it returns the next time it is driven. It has only been there for the last 1,276 miles. There are no other symptoms. Shifts fine, no leaks, no noise, transmission fluid and filters were changed about 3,500 miles ago. Shop indicated that there were no signs of heating or metal in the old oill. The shop tells me I need a new transmission. Does this sound reasonable; and, are there any other alternative repairs that does not include replacement?

Thanks for any help in this regard. I'm new to the forum, so I hope I have done this right.

Walt

You probably have a solenoid going bad which doesn't warrant replacing the entire transmission. Get a second opinion.
