Exclamation My Ram got slammed into last weekend now I need HELP!!

Hi guys I live in Seacoast, NH. And lets just say we love out MOPAR up here in New England

well to get to the point last thursday at my work I heard a loud crash from our parking lot, only to see ready for this "a runaway toyota" had slammed into the side of my baby "which is a 99 Ram 1500 quad cab stick shift" the gas pedal got stuck and the ass whole lost control. He was uninsured and had expired Temp plates, it was a 2010 camry. Anyways the nose of his vehicle hit my passanger front tire head on becuase its so low to the ground. My trucks alignment is all out of whack and I was really worried about the front end components being damaged. Now here is where I need some help, the first thing I checked was the 4x4 system since its all front end, my truck will not turn anymore in 4x4! left or right the tires lock up and skid. I told this to my insurance company as well as my mechanic who has my truck right now. I just got a phone call from my mechanic saying that theres nothing wrong with my rig it was just the 4x4 on dry pavement. Is this a load of crap or is he telling me the truth? I dont remember it ever doing that before but I also dont know if I have ever run my 4x4 on the dry pavement either. I know one of you guys has the right answer for me, should I believe my mechanic or take it somewhere else?

Thanks guys!
Tony

Tony, sorry to hear about the accident
I know others will chime in with a better answer, But, I have read in here that 4 wheel drive on dry pavement causes the truck to act every kind of strange, the wheels can't slip like they would on dirt, mud, & snow. so they sort of HOP instead

Dude i feel your pain my was parked on the side of a road a week after i bought it and some lady in a caravan slammed into it. Thankfully it just bent the box and bumper not the frame ..and severly injured the women . But back to the 4x4 it should turn on dry pavement it will squeal because the tires are digging in so like Gtyankee said it kinda hops but it shouldnt just lock up and not turn.

Sorry to hear about your rig, as far as the 4x4 on dry pavement it should still turn it might be a little loud when turning because all four wheels are "driving" but it shouldn't lock up and not turn, think the mechanic is full of it

that sucks, take your truck somewhere on a dirt road or in the grass and try the 4 wheel drive there

sorry to hear about your Toyota encounter...

welcome to the Forumz. Please take the time to stop by the newbie section and get a proper welcome

You also might want to fill out the user CP.. it'll tell us a lil about both yourself and your truck....

I agree with everyone else on the 4WD find another mechanic, and get another opinion. I think he's full of it.

I used to live up in your neck of the woods when I was active duty CG... was on New Castle Island, lived in Portsmouth. good to see someone from up around "God's Country"

Exco

You should never operate 4x4 on dry pavement unless you want to rebuild your transfer case. If you really want to check to see if your 4x4 works, head over to the Toyota owner's house and try doing 4x4 donuts in his front yard.

Realistically, all you have to do is throw it up on a lift or jackstands and see if 4x4 works. And I certainly hope you get money from that jackass who hit you. How in the flying blue f**k do so many people lose control of their cars in a damn parking lot?
