Default Any REAL fuel savings from a tonno?

I am looking at picking up an Extang Tonneau for the RAM. I'm reading the brochure from Extang, and they confidently predict a 10% fuel savings with the tonneau. Although fuel mileage is not the main reason I want a tonneau, it is a nice benefit.

Does anyone here have any experience with improved fuel mileage with a tonneau cover?

10% works out to a savings of about $8 (CDN) per fillup. I fill up about 7 times a month. Thats $56 fuel savings per month. That would pay for the tonneau pretty quick...

I don't see any savings because I do a lot of city driving. But, if you're on the highway a lot, this should work out nice for you

The Mythbusters episode where they compared the tailgate up and the tailgate down showed the tailgate up got 30 more miles than with it down. But I couldn't find the tonneau cover episode.

Hard cover vs mesh tailgate vs no tailgate

Mesh won.

"10% savings?!?!?!?!??" by a tonno cover???

BS.

'As much as' is probably included in 'the pitch' to keep the attorney's at bay,,,

From personal experience I noticed a difference in acceleration since there is no resitance from the wind. Fuel efficiency I do not really know since I drove the truck for about a month and got the cover. I think it is worth it since you get a truck after. You can put things in the back without getting wet, so it gives you more room for stuff

Even if you get a 2mpg bump in mileage, that equates to about a $10 per 25gal tank. At $10/week, probably wouldn't pay for itself while you have the truck. But you are right on, if you like the look and functionality, GO FOR IT!!!

Actually, though, when you do the math at saving even less than the $10 you suggest, it really WOULD pay for itself fast (if it saves the fuel. I drive quite a bit and I fill up 6 times a month, So....

6 fillups x $8 saved per fillup = $48 saved per month. The tonneau is about $450, so it would "pay for itself" (theoretically) in 10 months.

A long time ago a buddy who regularly did a 1000km drive swore that when he had his 12ft boat upside down and backward in the box of his truck it got significantly better fuel economy
Looks like it makes sense to have a Tonneau or have tailgate down but that Mythbusters thing messes it all up

I'm absolutely sure that the manufacturer's have tested this, they are looking for any way to fudge up figures for different reasons, gotta be reports somewhere
