LMAO.... sorry Paris... just can't help myself..

I can't say that I remember any unexpected "hitchhikers" while in an automobile...

I do remember several years ago. I was still working as a conductor, (aka. I hadn't yet become an engineer). It was the middle of summer, pretty much the middle of the night. We're cruising down the track, I have the front door propped open about 6"-8" to allow a breeze to flow through the locomotive cab. (OK the stage is set LOL)

The timing must've been just right, as at just about the time the slack from the rest of the train ran into us (basically letting us know that we still have freight behind us) (this happens often) causing the front door to open completely a HUGE owl comes flying straight in the door, and SLAMS into the back wall, knocking itself out cold.

I'm like WTF was that? I turn on the overhead light and see this owl lying on the floor of the locomotive cab. Before I even have time to react it jumps up and starts flapping it's wing and screaming like a banshee. My engineer is screaming at me to get the owl out of the cab. I had nothing to grab it with, as it was clawing, flapping, and possibly ready to take my arm off at the shoulder. My engineer eventually grabs the broom and tries to shoo it back out the door, this of course just pissed it off more. This went on for what was probably about 30-45 seconds, (but felt more like 10 minutes). The owl then apparently recovered enough to take flight, straight at me. I instantly duck and watch the owl fly towards the door it came in, only to be nailed halfway out by the door once again closing. I don't think it was hurt, as it landed on the nose of the locomotive, and flopped around for a few seconds before flying away.....

That incident pretty much scared the crap out of me. I've not propped open the front door on a locomotive since. Fortunately most of the locomotives that we use now are equipped with air conditioning, so propping the door open is no longer an issue.

I'll relate my experience of meeting Wally Gater up close and personal another time.....

HAHAHAHA, thats pure jokes!!!!

Quite the story's, I can relate to the owl one.

Twice we've had an owl fly into our house or window, and i live in a city, not the country, the first one died and a neighbor had it stuffed. the second one was dazed and confused, but got up and flew away. we think that one was flying for the birds in the cage inside the window lol.

Had a bird splatter itself off the top of my helmet when I was hanging out the side a Huey many years ago. We were tooling along on some NOE training, I was sitting back in the starbord well, and being the worrier I am I wanted an extra set of eyes making sure nobody had stretched a power line straight across some of the little swags we were flying through. Luckily I had my visor down to keep the wind out of my eyes because he caught me just above eyebrow level, right about the top of the shield. One second I was sitting there fat, dumb and happy enjoying the rush of flying over 100 mph at treetop level then the next it was like someone hit me in the head with a baseball bat. Didn't knock me out but it sure did addle me for a bit. To this day it still amazes me how every thing came together for the bird and my forehead to occupy the same spot at the same time, especially under a helicopter rotor while we were cutting air, but you'll just have to trust me - it did happen. It must have pulled pitch straight up just as we passed over its tree because nobody saw it. All that was left was a bloody dent in my helmet and bird guts and more blood streaked down the door I'd pinned open. There's another thread about user names in this section of the forum but I haven't gone by the one my buddies hung on me in right at 40 years. As you can imagine for the duration of my time in that unit my nickname was naturally 'Birdman'.
