We studied some of the innovations that Locheed put into the F-35 back in school. Loved how it transitioned when the X-32 had to have a bunch of panels to make it VTOL capable.

It was transitioning to VTOL mode. It has a secondary forward stabilizer thruster to provide thrust up front while the rear nozzle rotates 90 degrees from horizontal to vertical.

There are 3 versions of the plane. AF, Navy, and Marines and each variations meets the requirements of each branch. The Marines is the STOVL which is why the intake and rear thruster is facing down(harrier version). The Navy version is made for Air Craft Carriers. The AF is Conventional Take-off and Landing.

Ah, I don't know about the variations since the only time we were looking into it was when it was still an X-plane that was the trial VTOL prototype. I remember they had some serious issues with ground drafting with the VTOL and thrust loss at low level. I guess they decided the STOVL was more practical, not to mention it doesn't burn 1/2 it's fuel just lifting off vertically like the AV-8B does.

The Navy version, just the carrier launch/landing system on it or is there more? And did any of the versions keep the VTOL or are they all STOVL (aside from AF of course)?
