Default 2003 Ram Front End Knock over Bumps

I've heard a lot about the front end being trash on Dodge trucks. I just bought mine knowing that it is an achilles heel, and knowing that i'll be walking down a well beaten path.

So here I am looking for guidance...While going over bumps, I hear a knock/bump/bang from the front end, sometimes sounds repetitive (one bump in the road will initiated 2-3 knocks in RAPID succession...2-3 in less than .5 seconds).

I've heard a lot about ball joints, but haven't really tested mine. I raised the driver side front wheel, but it had zero play up and down. I've also heard a lot about sway/control arm ends, or whatever? I'm not good with front end issues, and this is my first 4x4.

If my above description is vague, here's what I experience. Driving down the road, BUMP *knock*....BUMP *knockknockknock*........BUMP *knockknock*.

Anyone have this problem?

Truck is a 2003 Quad Cab 4x4, 4.7L, 69K.

While Randy is the man here, I thought I'd take this opportunity to say hello as I see you're a new member. Best of luck with your front end issue. Let us know how it turns out for you. Thanks and talk to you soon.

I have a similar problem in my 92 ext. cab w/ Cummins. At least on my truck is sounds like something "light" - not necessarily "front end" strictly speaking. I've checked body mounts, engine mounts, battery tie down ect...
Sorry no help to offer just take comfort in knowing that we're a large group.

I appreciate the welcome! This is pretty much my dream truck! As far as specs, it is a 2003 Quad Cab 1500 with a 4.7L V8, 3.55 rear end with a manual shift transfer case (as opposed to the knob style). I believe it has the 5 speed transmission, but I haven't delved that far into it to know for sure. Only had it 1.5 weeks!

You have the 545RFE transmission. You need to inspect the links and joints of the steering and suspension system. I would pay particular attention to the sway bar and shocks for that particular type of noise.
