same problem i had. first it was #2 misfire. then it was misfires all over the board. replaced plugs (which were HORRIBLE and need it) and coil packs. fine for a little while. started losing coolant one day. turned into a gallon of coolant a week. billowing white smoke at every start. i could smell the antifreeze. i dont have the pop issue with the coolant reservior cap, but do have water in oil. compression test was normal. we diagnosed it to a cracked head. NOT saying it was what you have on your hands though. but i found a sweet deal on H.O cams and heads and went with those. just waiting for cleanup and install of them.

hopefully you dont have the same problem, but your story follows mine. let us know how it goes.

was talking to my buddy who works at a local garage and does towing and he's picked up 2 4.7's with a blown block. that was a horror story to me

Thanks RamItAll. I pulled the #1 plug and it did appear to have been "washed" with coolant on one side. I replaced the plugs, rad. cap, and dumped some Barr's head gasket fix in the radiator and crossed fingers. Have probably only put 100 miles on it since. I have not had to add any coolant since, and the code (engine light) cleared itself. Also pulled the diff. cover since reading the horror stories regarding the rear ends on these trucks. I had the diff. serviced while I had it in for some A/C work a couple of years ago. Well, dealers take shortcuts these days and only suck the fluid out, rather than doing a proper job of removing the cover and cleaning everything out. So, I did find evidence of a failure of the clip or whatever is prone to fail/fall out. It wasn't pieces of bearing. The rear end is still quiet, so I suppose it will last till I can trade it in. Since I did pressure check the cooling system or do a leakdown test, I'm not 100% sure on the gasket issue-perhaps I caught it early enough.

All in all, pretty dissapointing. I owned a 91 Dakota that I had put 140K on (purchased it with 60K on the odometer, sold it with 200K) It had the old 5.2, and other than a starter and other standard electrical parts that always need to be replaced, I never had any major issues with that truck.

I'd certainly not buy another of this generation 1500's with the 4.7

Thanks for your help as well, RamTech.

Block seals might buy you a few weeks, but if there is a serious problem, it will come back.

I agree with ya Dean. Not a believer of "mechanic in a bottle" solutions, but given the cost of new head gasket(s) replacement, I figured, what the hell.

lol thats what i said when i ran seafoam. and yes it seems now that i bought a 4.7 is when im hearing all the negative things about the truck. (also idk why i decided to buy a truck with IFS? just like a damned chevy) i wanted to mod mine left and right. but, i think after i do the heads, i might just throw some fender flares on and try and sell it outright. i want to upgrade to an 07 or 08 HEMI. maybe the new 4.7 but im not sure yet.

THEN all my master modding will commence

that's where I'm at. I bought this truck in 03 with 24K on it, and since it is not a daily driver have only driven it 44K in seven years. I figured I'd have the truck for a long time, but with all the issues I've had, I think it's time to look at something with a later model 5.7 or Cummins. It's unfortunate b/c the truck the paint and interior are more or less mint condition. Good luck.

I have the same problem, I am going to tear my head down tomorrow and see what happens. if you have a head leaking like that a mechanic in a bottle is the worst way to go. All that does is cover up the problem temporarily. its better to spend a little money now than a whole lot later.
