Default Towing Package or not?

Hi,

I just purchase an 09 RAM 1500 and the salesman said it has towing package. I would like to know how I can confirm that. It is standard? It does not have an under bumper trailer hitch, only the ball mount on the bumper. It does have the trailer plug socket.

Please advise.

Thanks,
John

Sounds like you have it . But I don't understand why you don't have the frame mounted hitch .

Im not sure if its a package????????? My 03 had a frame piece come off the main frame that went to and under the bumper for extra support. This wasnt a real trailer package..IE going by what i seen online.

A "towing package" can come in several configurations. What is on your truck is the base package and, while you have the plug-in, you don't have much capacity with a bumper hitch.

If you plan on towing a boat, a trailer or something along those lines, you need a Class III receiver hitch at a minimum.

I'd check into that if you will be towing something larger than a small utility trailer.

You can always upgrade the receiver hitch. I'd look for things like a HD transmission cooler, the 7-pin(?) trailer plug, etc... on the sticker. Those are a little harder to bolt on later.

I just went through all the sales lit for the 09 & 10, and could not find a trailer towing 'package'. The only trailer option was the class IV hitch.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe the Gen 4 trucks all come with trailer wiring as standard equipment, and already have adequate cooling. The only factor to consider is whether or not you require the HD hitch receiver.

Having said that, if your going to pull a trailer, do it right. Get the proper hitch receiver, proper insert (ie right drop to match the trailer), the right ball (this is good place to NOT cheap out), and a good proportional brake controller.

Earlier today while pulling a trailer weighing 5700lbs, I had a day dreamer pull from a red light, realize their error, and hit the brakes and stopped right in the middle of the intersection across both lanes. The anti-locks brakes on my Ram kicked in on dry pavement, the brake controller came on hard enough cause my trailer wheels to intermittently lock, and I stopped 5 feet from the drivers side rear door with a child staring wide eyed at the ram badge on my grill.

Unfortunately, the Chevy Corsica (or what ever it's called) that was in the lane beside me, hit the drivers fender hard enough to spin the care 180 degrees. Both the driver and child in the car ended up with big bruises on their foreheads from where the 'windows hit them'. Fortunately the bruises appeared to be all the injury they sustained.

The guy driving the Chevy did say that even though he tried to swerve, his car has been pulling badly when the brakes were applied for the past year....and squealed alot too !!!!

He didn't leave a single mark on the road....I painted it black with both truck and trailer.

Sorry for the rambling, and although this sounds like a lecture it is not meant to be. I just felt I should share this, as the incident is very fresh in my mind, and right now, I am proud that I am so anal about trailer towing. It just saved my Ram Sport from a trip to the body shop, me from the hassle of insurance etc. and.....Oh yeah....from possibly taking a child's life over a few dollars in trailer towing hardware.

B12 (complete with incident reminding shakes)
