Default swapping engines

Hi, Im new here. Been looking for a forum on my truck and found this one. From what I read so far, looks like the one to jump into. So heres my dilemma. I have a 1998 dodge 1500 with a 5.2 with 230k miles. Shes been a dog for a long time and getting low compression now in at least one cylinder. I want some power for my truck (to kick some butts from other Rams in town and to pull my boat to the lake). Dont want to buy another truck, love the one I have. Shes straight and no rust. So I want to move up to a 5.9 (360 gas) and do some mild modification to the engine. Punch the engine out 30 over, balance the engine, different cam and different heads. Thats all I want to do to the engine. Is this within the limits of an EFI engine? Im old school here and EFI is all new to me so bear with me. Have bought a 5.9 out of a 03Ram with the wiring harness and computer. Will the computer work with a 98 setup or should I find 98 computer and wiring harness? Any advice on the engine and computer would be great! This is my summer project before next winter.

The EFI should have no trouble handling a mild cam and some head work. The '98 PCM and wiring should work just fine but you'll likely wind up using a tuner to program your fuel and ignition curves.

As for dropping the 5.9L in, the harness and computer should still work from the '03 to the 98 as long as it's for the 5.9L. If I remember correctly, the coumpter is the same between the 5.2L and the 5.9L, but one of our 2nd gen guys hould pitch in soon. For machining out, and a new top end, that's definately within the realm of EFI motors. And finally the heads, I know that Edelbrock has the highest flowing magnum heads out there, so have a look at them.

The PCM's are the same for the 5.2 and 5.9 but the programming is different.

So let me get this straight. The pcm in my truck for the 318 will work on the 360 with reprograming. How do I go about doing that? Also the heads, does dodge had a decent set of heads to use or modified? Thanks!!

When you get everything finished, you'll need to go to a dyno tuning shop and have them custom make a program for your new displacement and timing/fuel. The stock magnum heads are OK, but Mopar does put out a set of performance magnum heads. Mopar Action Magazine did an article on juicing up a 360 in their 'Scat Dak II' series through the mid-late '09 mags and they had some good tips for the 360.

Can I use the 318 wiring harness with the 360? Any recommondation for a automatic transmission? Believe I have a 46@**?? Going to have this one rebuilt some so before I do.

what is the price range on having a pcm reprogrammed? or would it be easier to find a 360 pcm?
