Default Posi conversion?

Alright, I have a one wheel wonder (I know this by my lovely one skid burnouts ), and I want to convert to a posi-trac (or whatever Chrysler calls it, sure-trac?). I want to have some info on the conversion before I head into a gear shop. I'm also planning on a change to 3.90 gears, front and rear. 3.90s because this is still a daily driver, running stock height tires, however much I'd like the take off power from 4.10s. I believe I currently have the 3.55 ratio, and I know I'll need to swap both front and rear diffs, and I'll have it done at my friend's shop. Here are my questions:

Would it be easier to just get a used axle with the posi and re-gear it?

And what would I need to have installed if I did the swap on my stock axle. Do I get a posi/LSD but have no idea where to startt looking, or is there something else that has to be done instead? I am a noob when it comes to posi.

Getting a new set of axles and putting in ring gears is going to be a HECK of a lot harder than putting in a limited slip. When you buy a limited slip you've got to disassemble everything anyhow, pulling the whole axle is just going to make for extra work.

There are a lot of options when it comes to closes differentials. You've got electronic units, mechanical units, lockers, and limited slips.

Most vehicles come with a limited slip for two reasons. First, most people don't do their own maintenance or know a lot about their vehicles. This makes people freak out when they hear the locking, unlocking, and jerking of a true locker. Second, limited slips are good because they allow for more freewheeling even on hard acceleration. This gives you better turning and cornering.

The big difference between a locker and a limited slip is the locker will not allow one wheel to move faster than the other when it is locked. With the limited slip you unit biases the axles giving more power to the one that has traction if you're in something soupy like mud.

FWIW...Everything I've found suggests the stock unit is an Auburn unit.

Having a dad that played in the mud and having driven 4 wheelers my entire life I realized how important a closed differential was and that was one of the things I shopped for. First hand let me tell you....they make a DIFFERENCE in the mud, and on the snow. Wow, it's unbelievable.

Well i am pretty sure he summed it up very nicely!!
And i will agree, a posi unit will be easier to install if your already doing the gears, the entire carrier comes out anyways!! so at the same time you re gear it you can have your posi/LSD installed...unless you go the route of a true locker!
Eaton has some really good products from what i have heard so you could check them out for starters!

Check out richmond gear. I have one of thier powertrax units installed in the rear and think its great. You should go 4.10's if you keep it off the highway. If not i'd def stick with the 3.90's.

The only way I'd consider swapping the entire axle would be if I found a low mileage unit with the limited slip and 3.92 gear already installed.

It's not much more , I'd go with 4.10's . Your not making much of a increase from 3.55's to 3.92's . If you purchase a posi unit , your looking at a minimum of $350.00 . If I were you I would look into a locker unit . It takes the place of your spider gears . A lot cheaper .

This would be a really good mod to do. I would have to agree and say the 4.10s would be the way to go. You will notice a bigger difference with them rather than the 3.92s

Thanks for the great advice guys I'm still thinking the 3.90s since I mostly drive this truck on the highway and do want to enjoy some decent MPGs. I have a few more question after that round of info:

If I get a limited slip then would I still end up with only one wheel turning on hard acceleration? Or would I get both going if I was to do burnout? Not that the purpose is to burnout, I just want to know.

And, I'm think I might go for a locking diff so I can have both tires putting traction down at the same time. How does the locker affect the cornering? Do you have more tire squeal since both tires are still trying to move at the same speed?

You would get both rear wheels turning in a burnout. The Detroit locker I had in my Chevy didn't exhibit any more squeal than a LSD but it was a bit more squirrely on wet roads. I didn't personally see any advantages of the locker over a normal LSD and the cost of each unit is similar. I wonder if perhaps Tom was talking about a spool.
