Default Rack and Pinion on a 2nd gen Ram?

My brother's father in law has a 97 3500 and he is putting a rack and pinion on his front end and doing away with that problematic steering box. Has anyone done this before and had any luck with it? I am replacing my front end with all new MOOG parts, but I was thinking if I return all them parts and try and install a rack in my truck if it would work. I am thinkin it would be quite easy just drill mounts on the frame and get rid of the steering box and extend the shaft to fit in the rack and boom we got a bad ass steering system. Whats yall's thoughts?

I've not see it done before, personally. What vehicle is the rack coming from?

I'd be concerned about the strength of the unit if you do a lot of serious off roading along with bumpsteer since you won't be able to adjust it out.

I don't do much off roading with my truck any more, I got a 4wheeler I usually take out and my bros 4x4 02 ram. My ram is going to be mostly a street machine until huntin season opens and the most dirt it will see is on the gravel roads. My neighbor has a 2wd 02 or 03 1500 ram I am going to check the width from spindle to spindle to see if it can even be possible.

I'd still take some measurements and look things over with regard to bump steer too.

true, thats what I am going to be doing when I get off today, go next door with a handy tape measure lol. I use to have a 98 dakota with a rack and i don't understand why the rams didnt come equipped with em until 2002. I can understand the 4x4 rams due to the front straight axle.

Well I got the rack in and it drives pretty good a lot less play in the steering, I need new tires and shocks then I gotta redo my alignment. its a good upgrade for the street truck. I know my truck don't look like a street truck but one day lol.
