Default Turn signal acting off

Ok, so I started having this problem late last year when I pulled over to take some pictures of Christmas lights and put on my hazard lights. Then just as soon as it started it stopped and now my problem is back and it looks like it's here to stay. Basically when I go to make a turn and flip the turn signal on it'll do 1 of 2 things. Either absolutly nothing at all, or it will put the wrong signal on. So if I'm turning right it'll put the left signal on. Now on the few instances it does put the right signal on, and I start to make my turn, it'll either stop working, or it will alternate left and right signals rapidly. I can push the turn lever away from me and it'll help sometimes but that gets annoying quickly. I can also beat the top of the stearing coloum with my fist and that will also sometimes fix it. I do have the extended warranty for my truck, but there is still a $100 fee to look/fix anything that may be wrong. I don't want to fork out that cash if it's a simple loose wire that I could tighten. Any suggestions from the experts here!? Thank you in advance!

That sounds easy to replace. Is it and can I access it easily?

They aren't bad to do and you can do it yourself with a few basic hand tools.
