All I'm going to say is that I have NEVER seen a CTD block cracked. I wonder if the people with all these cracked 53 blocks are modding their engines and to what level.

Here is a little bit about the 53 block, and how to find out if it is in fact a 53 block...

To figure out if you have one of the dreaded "53" blocks, crawl under the front, left side, and look up at the block on the front, directly under the injector pump (by the PS pump). You should see a large wiring harness mounted to the block. Directly below this, just above where the oil pan meets the block you will look for a "53" cast in the block.

With the 53 block, you have pretty much a 50 50 chance that you will end up with a cracked block. Something about that particular casting was not good, and some cracked, while others did not. I would definetly crawl under the truck and check for the stamped "53" before buying.

35's will definitly affect the mpg maybe even up to 3-4 mpg over 31in stockers.
the overhead lie-o-meter went from about 26 mpg to 24.5-25mpg, actual is usually went from 24ish 21-22 mpg

if you have the good block, just remember diesel engines can be rebuilt several times over, when the cylinders get bored to the point of being too thin, then you can re-sleeve them & start all over again
Big rig diesels can easily have 2 million miles on them

This month of diesel power mag has an article on the cummins flaws and the 53 block is discussed as is the killer dowel pin issue. It shows you where to look and what to look for with the 53 block and how to fix the dowel pin issue.
