Default Rear Camera Confusion...

Maybe someone with a 2010 Ram equipped with the rear camera can help me.

On Dodge.com:

http://www.dodge.com/en/2010/ram_150...ing_assistance

They show a video of how the Rear Camera works... where you can see what is straight behind you as you are in reverse.

However... in the Ram Brochure:

http://www.dodge.com/en/pdf/2010_ram_1500.pdf

and on Mopar / Mopar Auth. Dealers websites...

http://moparestore.trademotion.com/M...r%20Monitor%20

They show the camera view to be different and looking down at the trailer hitch and not straight back. Can someone please tell me which one is correct?

Thank you

- Tim

My camera views the hitch area and straight to the rear, kinda like a wide veiw area.

It's a fisheye lens. You can see the bumper/hitch and you can see quite a bit behind the truck. It kinda distorts things, but that's what allows the super-wide angle of view. That picture you posted is not accurate. It must just be used for conveying the concept of a backup camera to people. And that video you reference isn't 100% accurate either, or else that truck's camera is adjusted differently. In the one I test drove you could see the bumper/hitch at the bottom of the image.

i bet that video is a generic video and they just do a different vehicle in for the birds eye view

EDIT: Grand Caravan is more what i think that rear view is from: http://www.dodge.com/en/2010/grand_c...ng_assistance/

The video posted here:

http://www.dodge.com/en/2010/ram_150...ng_assistance/

Is the best representation of the view you get.

Perhaps the picture was when the tailgate was down? I've reversed a few times with the tailgate down and it looks pretty damned similar.

with the tail gate down, doesn't that get in the way of the hitch possibly causing damage?

Never put it down with a hitch there...but I wouldn't see an issue if the clearance was correct on all sides. I was just running a hypothetical situation to figure out where they might have gotten their picture from.

dodge has 2 different rear cameras, mine mounts within the tailgate handle, i can see the rear bumper, I also see very clearly everything behind the truck, for several hundred feet, its almost as though my chin was resting on the top of the tailgate & I was only looking straight back, at night its like looking through a set of night vision goggles. the only problem with the camera is that OBJECTS ARE REALLY CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR. 1 foot away looks like its 6 feet away, with objects that are close to the tailgate, good thing that i also have the parking assist sensors

the other camera mounts down by the license plate & I have not had any experiece with that camera

I know the back up camera I have it's a wide angle so i see the hitch but also see a whole lot behind me as well. I can see the edges of my bumper and quite a ways back. Getting used to the view takes a bit, but once you do, you can back upto something and stop an inch away everytime.

Those cameras are a very useful tool. I used to drive a Chevy Taho with that camera and I loved it. When you are in a tight parking lot it comes it really handy. You think you do not need it but once you use it you love it! Great thing to have!

They even make aftermarket cameras that have the screen in the rear view mirror. This is a good mod to do if you pull up to trailers often or even for convenience.
