Default rear end howl??

So I have noticed a slight howl like the rear end gears usually do at 40 through 50 mph holding steady. My buddy who is the service manager at a dodge dealership says it is because of the eco mode and the exhaust? Being a tech myslef I dont see how a "rear end howl" would be caused by the motor going into v4 mode. The usual tone of v4 mode on a v8 truck is a low outboard motor type sound. My truck does have the factory muffler with the dual outlets(stock)

Anyone experience this? My chevy had DOD(displacement on demand) and there was no such noise.

Please tell me the axles are not complete junk like on the 08's and previous!!

First off, welcome to the ForumZ,

This forum is full of great looking trucks, and packed with great mod ideas.
There are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here.

Secondly - One Word - "Warranty"
If you have pointed it out to the dealer, and they don't seem concerned, then drive it until it changes.....or get a second dealer opinion....if it changes worse, report it again, and so on, and so on. If it breaks, at least you have record of your concerns, and they have to fix it....under warranty.

Enjoy the Z!

I have the same, slite, howl during very light loading between 40-50 mph. Not all the time either. I had a service tech, that does all the drive train work, go for a ride with me and it made the noise once and he heard it too. He said it was coming from the rear end and when it got louder to bring it in and they would open it up. That was at 5,000 and now have 9,000 and it hasn't gotten any louder but is still there.

The axle is the same (9 1/4") as on previous models only set up for coil springs. You can tell that service manager he's full of shit. If there's another dealer nearby, try them and if not, give Chrysler customer service a call.

Well I guess it sounds like a rear end issue. Good thing you have warranty, bring it in and give em shit!!

I guess you can let your buddy know there is a deeper problem.

Exact same problem on my 2010 RCSB Sport 4x4. Howls at lower speeds under light load. It goes away at higher speeds. I complained about it to the dealer but they said they couldn't hear anything which is bs, because it is very noticeable cruising around town, even with the radio on.

At 6K miles, mine is developing a very, very slight 'howl' as well. Barely noticable.

yeah, Ill be taking mine in. Im very anal about noises and a brand new truck should not have a rear end howl at all. Not acceptable, I never ever had an issue with my gm trucks and I would think that dodge would have fixed issues of years past.

Might be more of a problem than we think especially if lots of you have the same issue with a new truck. Ill keep you posted, I will get my way and will have a new complete rear axle assy bolted up to the truck.

By the way I have the 3.92 rear end

I towed for the first time this weekend(6x10 enclosed single axle fully loaded with race bikes and gear) and the truck pulled like it wasnt even there!! very impressed!!

Those of you experiencing this problem... is your bed open or covered? And if covered which one?

mine was uncovered with bedliner, now its covered with bedliner. Thats not a factor in this though. If it was something like that the noise would happen at more of a speed range and would continue with or without your foot on the accelerator.

While holding the throttle between 40-50 you hear the noise, once you let off the gas it goes away because there is no more load on the gears in the rear end
