Default Understanding Tire Sizes

Hopefully Im not the only one that wants to be sure of this.

I know how to read a basic tire size:

P225/50R16

or in our Case:

LT245/75R16

Which are matric ratios for tire sizing.

But the Nitto Grappling tires have alternate sizes too like:

35X12.50R20LT

I know the R20LT portion means Radial, 20" wheel and Light Truck Application. Does the 35X12.50 represent the overall height and width of the tire in inches?

If so... and that is a good or the largest size tires that can be used with only 2" leveling in the fornt... what would be the conversion to the metric tire sizing standard?

I never bought after market tires that were not the same exact tire, which is really easy to do. LOL

But With my ram I want to understand what sizes I can do and how to understand what the sizes mean so when I shop.. I can get the right thing.

Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

Your right on the 35x12.50 being the width and diameter.....not all tires are true to what is really printed on them either!! so you have to watch out for that...some tires may advertise as a 35 but will be less and some may be more!

When it comes to converting them a 12.50 wide tire in the metric fashinon would come out as a 315, trying to determine the overall diameter is a little trickier...cuz in the metric way it would be a 315/70/20....the 70 refers to a percentage of the width (315) and that is the height of the sidewall...so then you must multiply that by 2 then ad the rim diameter....see how confusing this gets?? haha

My trick to working with metric tire size if i want the overall diameter or width is to use a tire conversion calculator...i have found a really handy one

http://www.ajdesigner.com/fl_tire/tire.php

Hope this helps you

Thanks ruffain... Thats what I thought... and I was looking at a different calculator... and now yours. I entered the standard measurements: 35X12.5R20 In metric it shows it as: 317/60R20, which s different then your numbers you mentioned. I triued searching both:

315/70R20 and 315/60R20 and I see tires in my results for the 60's but not 70's. This is where I am confused. I like the standard measurement better... but most are in the metric measurement.

I like the Cooper Zeon Tires like Cadet has or a few of you guys have the Nitto Gappling tires. So maybe I should just get one of these two and stop looking around. LOL But I want to try to understand it better.

Sorry for the confusion...i was using the 315/70/20 as a example...i wasn't sure if there is tires actually made in that size...i doubt there is!

As well you said you found 317 as being true 12.50" wide...which is probably right! but metric tire sizes usually go in the pattern as 185, 195, 205, 215, 225, 235, 245, 255, 265, 275, 285, 295, 305, 315....so on and so on depending on how wide you want....i don't think you can find anything in between a width of that when looking at metric tires!

the 315 i used in the example i used above comes out at about 12.4" wide

the 315/60/20 is an excellent choice for getting a 35x12.5...your probably bang on or slightley under being a true 35

I'm running a 325/60/20 which is like 12.8" wide and 35.3" tall...i do rub though, so a 315 is probably a better choice if you would like to avoid rubbing!

Ah okay... That clears it up. LOL

Im new to buying stuff like this... so i may ask stupid questions here and there. thanks for explaining it.

I agree... I think the 315 would be the way to go.

Thanks again. Appreciate the help.

Most tire mfgr's say minimum rim width for those tires is 9" so you should be good, Tim.

Appreciate that Michael. I really like the grapplers. have sort of a butch look and if getting the right ones... they wont be to harsh (loss in HP and MPG and increase in noise etc) and at acceptable levels.
