So my dad and I have debated over this for quite some time now. He is of the opinion that you have to wait 4-6 hours before washing the engine compartment, even if the truck has sat over night and the was place is less than a mile away. What do you guys think?

He's advocating doing it on a cool engine, right?

I've seen it done on warm and cold engines. There are a lot of ways to do it.

CdnoilRam just did a write up on his engine detail work.

I've used Gunk Engine degreaser on a warm(not hot) engine with no problems. Some of the store brand sprays will smoke off if you put them on a warm engine.

It is usually recommended to do it on a cool engine, but if you are driving less than a mile, it shouldn't heat up hardly at all, in which case you'd be fine.

I have done both cold and warm cleans. Seems to me warm works better. Easier to wash with warmth than cold!
