Default Towing question

Hi,

I just recently purchased a 2003 1500 4.7L 2wd with 3.55 gear ratio with trailer package. I called the dealer and they said max towing is 6400lbs. I am looking to purchase a 27" TT with a weight of 5500 lbs dry, a 690 lb hitch weight, GVWR of 7690 lbs. Will i be able to tow this tt?
Please any answers will be great, thanks i am new to this truck and trailer thing

It will be a bit tight because you have to figure in the weight of your passengers and any cargo, plus anything you put into the trailer.

Most tow ratings are based on Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, i.e., the maximum you can tow.

Your vehicle is rated at 6400 pounds so the dealer is correct.

What that means is that you should not exceed the 6400 pounds when towing. Most folks don't put fresh water in the tanks until they get to their destination.

Also, two other things to consider:

GCWR - Gross Combined Weight Rating, which is the total weight of your truck (loaded with fuel, passengers, cargo, etc) + the weight of your towed vehicle. You can probably get that number off of your door sticker or call the dealer.

Hitch Rating - 690 lb hitch weight probably assumes a full loaded trailer, which you won't be towing that much. Even if it's mostly empty, normal hitch weight is usually 10% of it's weight. That means that you'll want, for safety sake, a Class IV hitch to handle that weight plus the weight you are towing.

I assume there are brakes on the trailer. You will want a brake controller installed, a load leveling hitch/anti-sway hitch.

IMHO, you'll be working that 4.7L engine and trans pretty hard. Check to see if you have a transmission oil cooler. If you don't, I strongly suggest you get one installed.
