Post Volant CAI options

I just got off the phone with Volant Customer Support and thought I'd pass along some information.

I got to studying the Volant web site and had almost convinced myself that it would be possible to install a PowerCore filter in the stock air box (with a little addition/modification to the intake tube). They do make an angled, offset version that would help point the filter towards the fender snorkle at the front of the stock air box.

However, after studying it a bit closer and calling Volant directly, they need a good 1.5"-2" of open space/clearance off the end of the filter. This is due to the fact the PowerCore filter takes the majority of its air in from the END of the filter (axially) rather than radially like standard conical filters do. The PowerCore filter is just a bit too big (6"-8" in diameter and 7"-8" long). The stock air box is barely more than 8" wide! There's no sense in putting in a top of the line filter and then choking it off with a poor install. I was looking to go cheap but I don't recommend it in this particular case.

On another note - I would recommend looking into the PowerCore filter. Volant claims it will drop-in to other CAIs (just not the stock air box). It looks to have at least a good 10x greater filtration area than standard cone filters and comes with a (4) yr/100,000 mile warranty for urban use!

Thanks for the information. I made a custom intake and decided I didn't like the look. My next option was what you were talking about, modifying the stock air box. I have decided to go with the Volant and the powercore filter when I get the money.

I found a good price on the Volant last month and it arrive this evening! What a difference! Still nice and quiet on idle and cruise but what a growl when you step on it! It's way too early to tell MPG effect yet but the "Butt-Dyno" says it's good! She's got quicker throttle response and I swear she's shifting a little better as well!
