First line of defense is my Akita waiting for the BAD GUY command. Second is my .357 and if he still makes it that far...my other half is also a retired LEO who has always shot perfect scores on the range....and boy she reminds me of it too!

That sucks!! I dont think you can really mentally prepare for somthing like that. A shotgun with birdshot is a great home gun. The birdshot will stop a target but drywall will stop or at least contain the other pellets keeping people in other rooms safe. I have a 20ga loaded with it, but also keep my 45 with a HP round and my wifes 9mm with hornaday defense rounds close

As much as I believe in bringing maximum firepower to bear, shooting into a neighbors house is a very real concern where I live. I have a 9mm Makarov semi auto loaded with Hornaday hollow points. It doesn't have the impressive knock down power of a .357 or a .45 but it will stop an intruder with little chance of an errant round penetrating a neighbors house and causing any unintended injuries. Training and marksmanship are more important than the caliber of the weapon. Any weapons expert will tell you that a trained marksman with a .32 can do more damage than the average person with a .45.

We have an alarm, a 12ga and a .40 all at the ready. We're not paranoid, we're prepared. The 20ga stays in the closet with the other toys though. The sound of a round being chambered in a shotgun is a very distinct sound and will deter most folks. For the crackheads though, a bite in the chest from the Mossberg is more appropriate.

Taurus Raging Bull Model .500 S&W
Sig Sauer P226 NAVY 9mm

My wife holds the bull for show...dont get me wrong she can take you down with it, but we have kids in the house and we dont want to risk hitting them....thats why I use my Sig Sauer P226 NAVY. Its great for home defense. I dont use shotguns simply because I dont like the mess. No matter what you use make sure to spend adequate time at the range. A gun is only as good as the person who opperates it.

Glazer safety rounds. If they hit a wall, they pretty much turn into powder.

I'd recommend a handgun as your primary. Long guns are unwieldy unless you have TRAINED with them. A handgun is easier to control, especially in a panic situation.

A good handgun, in my opinion at least, is the Smith & Wesson M&P .40. It's got good mag capacity, minimal recoil, easy to handle, and has the stopping power of a .4 cal range bullet.

Also, if you're anywhere near Lakeland, I'll be back there after the 17th, I would be glad to give you some training. (Former US Navy Military Police)
