Default quick tranny question

i have a quick question about my tranny, when the truck is in drive and I take off from a dead stop it takes off in 2nd gear but if I manualy put it in 1st it takes of like it should then I put it back in drive and it shifts through the gears like normal. Is this just a sensor? It has been like this for a while and not got any better or any worse.

I noticed this is your first post....Welcome!

Why don't you introduce yourself in the 'Newbie Checkin' so we can welcome you in the proper forum Z style.

That is one interesting tranny issue. I am not knowledgeable enough to help out here, but there are many that are. I expect you willhave some good advise shortly.

Enjoy the Z!

Thanks for the replys, and I will try to make my way to the newbie section here shortly. Yes it is a weird problem other than having to put it in first to get it in first it shifts fine through all the gears, except when you mash the gas it will stay in whatever gear you are in till redline and wont shift till you let off the gas?

You definitely have a problem there. That is just not normal!
This is a thread I'll be watching. Very curious as the final outcome.
Good Luck!

Now I had a 99 eclipse that did something similar. Turned out it was just low on tranny fluid. When the fluid was low, it wouldnt shift right at all. Its a far shot, but check your tranny fluid level.

the fluid is a possibility. Might be worth doing a flush and a new filter.

If its not that, though, I would think a vehicle speed sensor could be the culprit. Don't take my word for it though, but, could be not telling the trans computer you are at a dead stop like it should.

I'd def do the flush and put a new filter in it just for the heck of it anyway.

Hi To all Members.
Im from the UK and i brought my 96 Dodge the weekend and it has the same problem as you described..
Only goes into 1st if put into 1st Position and Pulls off in 2nd when in Drive!!
when i check the fluid level it seems as if someone had overfilled her as the level passes the curves on the dipstick, i am currently getting a cooler for this transmission as it uses the radiator which i know is Bad for all Trannys, but could the high fluid level be the problem or is this a Govener Problem.??
Any help would be great.?

Welcome to the forum Pontiac79, since I see you're new here! Sorry to hear about your problem, too, but hopefully someone should be along shortly who can shed some light on this. In the meantime, be sure to introduce yourself in the Newbie Checkin and get your official Ram Z welcome!
