Default 2010 HU swap / FoxBox install

Started this project last weekend........finished today.

My original thought was to swap out the factory sub for a 10" in a vented FoxBox. LOC out from the HU, running to my amp. Got that wired up last weekend - and I didn't like how it sounded. Not enough thump. Damn factory head units........

So, this week I bought a new head unit. I picked up an Alpine ixa-W404, dash kit, PAC C2R-CHY4, PAC SWIJACK and an antenna adapter. Woke up Saturday morning and started the fun of wiring. (I hate wiring).

Had some fun with getting the head unit to fit. Even though Crutchfield and anyone else shows that this HU fits.......it doesn't. Not without some modification. First you have to cut the plastic between the radio bolts, then you have to remove the top of the metal surround behind the radio. Tin snips to the rescue!

Pics of that:

Got it all wired up, including the stupid wires to the parking brake and brake pedal..........PAC makes a kit to fix that.......I'll probably pick that up sometime. Fired it up, sounds MUCH better!!! Programmed the steering wheel controls - works great!

Still up in the air on if I will replace the door speakers yet. We'll see.

And pics of the new head unit in the truck:

By the way - I LOVE the sound of the FoxBox - but it DOES NOT FIT in the 4th gen crews. I had to remove all of the carpet under the seats, and make my own spacers. The ones that were not right. They didn't line up with the bolts, the outer spacers were 3" too short, and they didn't provide enough lift.

If you don't feel like doing some fun modifications...........don't get the FoxBox, or a double din head unit.

Yup!

No CD or DVD slot at all. I had a single din version of this in my 08, and I LOVED it. No moving parts inside of it to go bad. I just wish it had a 30GB hard drive built in, that would be SWEET! Not to say that I can't just nab a 32GB flash drive at some point. My 8GB is going to be quite full soon.........I have about 43GB of MP3s to choose from.

Also has a direct connection to an iPod / iPhone, which is nice too. BUT, I have found it a bit easier to just use a thumb drive for music. Cleaner too.......can't see the wires if I have it going to a thumb drive.

I just picked up a under the seat sub box for 2 10's for my 2003 Ram Quad cab and realized that it does not sit down all of the way. As you mentioned, it looks like the carpet has to be removed. Any suggestions on removing the carpet? I would rather not cut out carpet if possible, just for keeping it looking nice when I want to trade in for a new one.
