Default Dodge ram stuck in drive !!!!!

So i drive down the highway to go see a car im interested in probably a 45 min drive. As i pull in i go to put truck in park and the lever slides over as if theres nothing connected to it, just kind of freely moving. I put it in park and when i take my foot of brake the truck goes backwards. Now i put it in drive and it moves formwad but now thats all it will do. No matter what gear it says im in the truck will just drive. I was able to drive it all the way home but now its stuck in my driveway since i cant turn it on because its in drive. NO cel and no leaking fluids. WTF could it be

Since I'm not familiar with that model year, I can only suggest basic ideas that are general to most vehicles with mechanical shift mechanisms and a shift lever on the column.

Check the shift rod that attaches to the steering column and goes down and connects to the transmission. Sounds like it came out of one end or the other. Possibly the clip that holds it on...fell out/off.

Please ensure you have the truck properly blocked before going under it. With the symptom you described, it could easily roll, and while DIY can deal with it quicker and likely less costly, it's not worth getting hurt over.

It might be the linkage has popped off or is loose, out of adjustment.

Found the problem. Theres a plate that has two bolts that bolt to the fram on the linkage. The two bolts snapped off so that the plate wasnt attached to nayhting. Gonna have the plate welded bacnk on

Can you extract the broken bolts ? I would rather make that attempt first . I don't like to weld things like this unless I absolutely have to .

This is really good advice!
Preserves serviceability, and doesn't apply any heat to the frame!
