Default Any auction experiences???

Greetings folks! I'm looking into buying a 2500, and came across an auction. I'm really not sure about this method of buying. Can any of you folks share any car auction experiences? Whether good or bad, I'd like to hear/read from you.

Another thing, I've noticed some vehicles have rebuilt/salvage titles, is there any big deal buying one of those?

It depends on why it has a rebuilt title. Wreck, flood, fire. Rebuilt title vehicles can be a great buy, I would want to know the history and talk to the person that fixed the car. This may not be possible for a vehicle at an auction.

As far as auctions go, yeah there can be some great deals. I always want to hear a vehicle run and drive it before buying it. Sometimes this is possible at an auction if you go ahead a day or two before the auction, other times its not. Sometime the auctioneer will give the history of the vehicle, but keep in mind they are trying to get top dollar. My very limited experience on auctions is that is takes great patiences, and going to many auctions to get the great deals.

Welcome to the site. Don't forget to introduce yourself in the Newbie section.

What type of auction is it? Police? Salvage/Insurance?

With salvage vehicles, banks don't like to give very big loans on them, as they don't really have much to go on with regards to book value. My dad and I buy and sell salvage vehicles all the time, (my truck is salvage title) we generally feel that if you take the book value of the vehicle figure 1/2 to 3/4 of that with a salvage title on it.

With buying one that has been fixed you need to know what was fixed. I take pictures of before, during, and after to show all that I have done to show the person buying what was done. State of Iowa there is a paper that you sign saying you know it was a wrecked vehicle. It also has to get inspected to be sure no stolen parts were used(receipts help alot). Let me know if there are any other questions I can help with, or if there something more needed.

I think it's a salvage/insurance auction. Great info guys, the vehicle I'm really interested in actually has a clean title so I guess that's a good thing =)

Any online auction experience? O=)

Never say never, but I would say I would never buy a vehicle through and on line auction. Two reasons why, SCAM, and not getting what you paid for. I have known about 3 or 4 people that bought vehciles, without looking at them in person.

One guy I know bought two Corvettes, but saw photos or a video of them. The first one was O.K., but he wanted a perfect car so he sold it after a year or two. The second Corvette he bought was very nice and pretty much as advertised. My boss bought his car through E-bay. Its a Huyndai(sp?) and it was pretty much as advertised. It would have made me nervous as there was a slight delay in him getting the title.

I guess I'm the kind of person that wants to see and drive the vehicle before I bought it.

Absolutely, I would have to see it before buying it.. I scheduled for a mechanic to inspect it, so hopefully all goes well. Here she is: http://easyexport.us/carfinder/vehic...=4c054bdec9d5b She looks pretty good right?

I usually go to QCSA. they have online bidding. but I can also go look at the vehicle too. I look in Des Moines and the Eldridge one. I would just wonder why a non salvage vehicle would be at a salvage vehicle auction. Also different states have different laws what constitutes a salvage title.(so much damage)
You can have a wrecked(totalled) vehicle, not sell it back to the insurance company, fix it and it will still have a regular title. so instead of a mechanic, i would have a body guy look at it.

My first reaction is why are the wheels different on one side than the other. Niether side is factory. I agree, check the thing out for body damage. If it goes for anything near the current bid of 6k, it would be a steal, unless it had major problems.

Be extreeeeemley and i mean extremely careful. Alot of if not most of auction cars are wreck rebuilds. Alot of rams i originally looked at were accident rebuilds. Be very very careful when buying auction vehicles.

make sure it wasn't in a flood, water damage was alright in vehicles before computers, pre 1970, we used to buy them, remove the seats & flush everything out, changed all fluids, etc. seats & other cloth we would get from a wrecked car
since computers started being used, we got out of the business
