Default Ok maybe I'm crazy - funny EVIC happening today with mileage

History - I've had my truck three weeks today and up until this point it has been a major challenge to get anything on the EVIC mileage(historically) to go much over 12mpg, including a couple of hwy sessions where I could get ~17-18mpg sustained for 20 or so miles if I drove ~65 and didn't prod the pedal at all.

So schlepping around town today watching my ~10mpg avg I reset the gauge again and don't think much of it. Tonight I run a quick errand and now I'm averaging 14.4 or so. I reset it again on the way home and *magically* I'm now getting 14ish as I normally drive(pretty conservative but have a tendency to run a few rpms in 1st for the magnaflow's sake lol). I then drive very conservatively and my mileage is now ~15mpg, avg speed 30mph for the last few miles. What gives?

I'm not aware of an ECU that does any sort of break-in mileage or hour measurements(although the Dodge does know how many hours are on the engine unlike most other ECUs I've played with) but guess something could be there. I just clicked 800mi tonight, sitting at 820 or so now and 28hrs on the engine.

Is this pure coincidence? I've been driving it like my Cummins wondering about what mods I can do to improve mileage and ... well now I'm inclined to rest a little easier now. I'll keep tabs on it but I'm pleased to say the least that I *seem* to be able to get 14-15mpg around town without having to try really hard.

Granted, this is all on the EVIC and not actual measurements. I'll do that once I get to an empty tank and convert from 87 to 93 for tunes.

I'm experiencing the opposite. Driving home from the lot when I bought it I was averaging 16-17. After driving it for a week I'm averaging 13-14. I just rolled 800 miles as well.

I was constantly getting 12-13mpg when I first got my truck. I wasn't happy at all. Ever since I passed 5k miles, I consistantly get 16-17mpg unless I tow something. I'm not impressed with the towing. Should have gotten the 3.92 rear.

on this truck(3.92) having regretted not getting the 4.10(I think that was the tall gear option) on my '08 2500 Cummins. I got the 3.73 on that truck thinking it would have plenty of torque to do whatever I threw at it and the 3.73s are just long enough to have it guessing gears a lot at ~65mph with some 35" tires on it. Towed ok but had to go back to a 33" to keep it from hunting all the time.

I think I just drove mine much harder the first few tanks, then settled down. I'm like you guys, 13.5mpg or so the first 4-5 tanks, and now 16-18mpg (4100mi, 3.55's). As far as pulling, 65mph seems to be the hardest on all newer vehicles. If I go 70-78mph, I make better mileage, or if I slow to 55 I make better mileage (towing). This was true in my 03 6spd Cummins too w/ 33's and 35's w/ 3.73's. I know she sags big time w/ any kind of load, but sure rides nice empty. Guess I could always put bags under her if I were to actually use her like a truck.

Traffic, warm ups, cool offs, trips through the ATM, tellers, Drive thru's, etc, all slaughter your MPG.

Wanna know what you are getting right now? Reset the EVIC and watch.

Wanna know what you get on a tankful? Reset the EVIC when you fill don't touch it til you fill again.

MPG will eventually improve some on a new truck. Takes a while for tires and powertrain to break in.

I reset mine when I fill up and don't touch it until I fill up again. I have found that the mileage that it says I am getting is almost dead nuts accurate. My 03 and 05 trip computers were always about 3 to 4 mpg off from actual hand calculations. This truck is right on. I just hit 3000 mile on her and I am averaging around 15mpg around town.

The thing is when you reset that it reads really high at the start. Once you keep driving around it will go back down a bit. If you want to get some better MPGs you have to start off with the trucks breathing. So that would mean CAI, Headers and exhaust. Once you get it breathing you can move on to a tuner. Those will help out with the MPGs. Also freeing up the motor helps out as well, like getting an efan or an underdrive pulley.

Hope this helps you out!

I've noticed a drop in my 05 hemi since the ethanol gas. I got 19.8 on a tank of New Jersey 94 octane after racing at Etown on the return trip. After I get back to Maine and we only have crappy 91 octane ethanol blend, struggle to get 16 mpg on a tank. Same with my RT Magnum, used to get 26 mpg on 93 octane, now it's hard to average 20 mph on a tank of 91 oct crap gas.
