Default Axle play question.

Hey guys I have 2 questions that i need help with. 1st off I drive a 96' ram 1500 single cab shortbed with the 5.2 magnum 2-wheel drive, automatic. Everything runs fine and have had no major problems with anything since i've owned it for the last 3 months or so. But until today I got in it and had run some errands but started noticing a wheel clunking sound coming from the rear of the truck. i pulled over and shook the bed back and forth and noticed some play in the axle. Could this be bad wheel-bearings and if so how can i really tell if thats what it is. I shook the bed on both sides and can hear a clunking sound from the drum from both sides of the bed. I checked all the lug nuts and they were all tight. could it be bad wheel bearings or something internal in the rear end causing the axle to have some play. Also i noticed that when i'm slowing down at a light my truck shakes violently and enough to make the bed shake as well. have any of yall had this problem i don't know where to begin to look as i am no mechanic. any ideas or help would be really appreciated. thanks guys ~Ronnie~

you should maybe block your wheels after parking on level ground, shut it off, put the truck in neutral, slide under & try turning the drive shaft, it could be that the noise is coming from the universal joints, if there is no play there, then start checking out the rear differential & axles

k well i checked the drive shaft and it seems to be tight enough not hardly any play because thats what i thought it was too at first but it is ok. i'm mainly noticing some back and forth play on the rear axle and when i shake the bed it makes a clunking sound like the drum is moving back and forth and hitting something. I'm so flusterred lol It's driving me nuts because i'm not much of a mechanic. Would bad wheel bearings cause the axle to have some play. and whats weird is it does'nt make any sounds when i'm on the gas only when i let off and i'm coasting so i don't think its in the rearend or i can't hear it over the exhaust when i'm on the gas which also could be why.
