Default CAM!

All,

I am looking to upgrade to a little hotter cam. First question, where will i find the stock cam numbers so I will know what the next step would be and secondly, what else should i upgrade to compliment the cam? Last question is where would I found the information i have googled it, gone to the library (yes they still have those) and asked around a little.

Thanks in Advance,

Jay

Since I don't know what other mods you may already haveor what your budget is, I'll give you my preferences. Keeping in mind that an engine is just a big gas powered air pump, you want to remove as many restrictions as possible. The 3 most obvious things in my book are a set of headers, free flowing exhaust with high flow converters, and a CAI. You're also going to need a tuner to remap your fuel and timing curves to match the new cam and other mods. Keep in mind if you go radical with your cam, you will also need converter with a higher stall speed. Do you plan on changing your diff gear ratio? If you're willing to spend some bigger bucks, new heads will yeild more HP as well.

The factory cam in your Hemi has a .472 intake lift, .460 exhaust lift and the duration is 254 degrees with 34 degrees of overlap. When you're cam shopping, don't forget the valve springs and lifters.

I have my exhaust done, CAI and Tuner are the next on the list (should be next month). I want a hotter cam with daily drivability, so what should expect my budget to be?

thanks,
Jay

That will really depend on who will be doing the labor and how far you want to go with it. Chefred and a few other members with practical experience hot rodding the 5.7 are the ones we need to chime in about that.

You may want to contact several cam companies and discuss what your trying to do . See what they recommend . Make sure you tell them this is a daily driver and what your intentions are .

I agree....talk with Chefred here a bit about what he's learned.

I know that BMC has cammed quite a few car HEMIs and they would be worth talking to as they do the installs as well as sell the parts.

If you're looking for a cam that's got some go but retains the drivability without the need for custom tuning, then pick up a 6.1L HEMI cam. Your computer will learn the new cam in a few days so there's no need for custom tuning. If you want a more agressive cam that would require some tuning, then I'd go with the Inertia Motorsports Spartan cam, it's got a 214/218 duration and is MDS friendly.

Remember, if you do upgrade to any cam, you should pick up the 6.1L springs and push rods.

what year is your truck? how far do you plan to go with modding? higher stall torque converter? maybe gears? heads? this helps in determing cam choice..do you want a totally pcm friendly cam or do you want to do any custom tuning.. lsa can determine how aggressive or pcm friendly a cam to use. the 6.1 cam, altho a decent cam is pretty obsolete in terms of cam choices. It's power comes on later..now with that said, you can take a 6.1 cam and have it reground with spartan cam specs but a milder lsa which makes it a nice pcm/canned tune friendly. Talk to Stu at Inertia Motorsports..tell him what you want, what mods you have and he can recommend a great grind for you.. he was spot on when recommending the Spartan with an aggressive lsa...I love it's street/track manners and with over 180k miles on my truck, it's been pretty reliable...

Thanks all. I will call some of the companies listed once my CAI and tuner are installed so they will have the whole picture.

Chefred, what is lsa? Do you have a grey area of what I should expect to spend if I got the 6.1 cam lifters and springs?
