Exclamation The 30k Service - The Real Truth

The 30k service - what should really be done? The simple answer is in your glove box. The things that really need to be done and will ensure your warranty will remain intact are listed right there in the maintainence section. This is the bible as far as the service schedule goes and nobody can tell you any differently. Sure, service departments and independent shops will often try to sell these packages because some vehicles still require a lot of these services every 30k and the people selling them haven't broken the habit of trying to sell them at those intervals. Below is Chryslers official policy regarding fluid flushes for 2005 and newer vehicles.

Chrysler Group vehicle fluid systems do
NOT require regular flushing. These systems

include: engine oil, transmission oil, axle lube, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and
refrigerant. The only exception to this requirement are published in the vehicle
maintenance schedules, e.g. engine coolant.

Exceptions to this recommendation include only those instances where a failure has
occurred and/or the system has become compromised, contaminated or overheated
beyond the normal operating range.

Chrysler Group does NOT recommend aftermarket chemicals to flush the engine,
transmission, brake or steering systems. Chemicals contained in these products can
damage the system elastomeric components, and contaminate the component fluid,
leading to loss of system/component durability and service life. When necessary, only the
original approved system fluid should be used to flush these components using teamPSE®
approved equipment.

If the engine coolant contains a considerable amount of sediment, clean and flush with
Mopar Cooling System Flush, p/n 04856977, or equivalent. Follow with a thorough rinsing
to remove all deposits and chemicals. Refill with a minimum of a 50% mixture of the

specified coolant and distilled water.

Even though I run nothing but synthetic fluids in my truck, I still change them at the recommended intervals. I do the oil every 5k, the diffs and transfer case every 15k, and the transmission, brake and power steering fluids every 30k.

Well done Randy , thanks for posting this. The important thing is to have service done according to the schedules laid out in the maintenance section of your owners manual. If you are harder on your vehicle than the average joe better to follow the rough service side.

Good stuff, Randy. I agree with the service intervals despite the use of synthetics.

Oil change at 5,000 miles using synthetic? Wow, that's almost a waste. I run Mobil 1 on all my vehicles minus the Cummins and I wouldn't use that early of an interval, unless I'm taking my cars to the track. I do agree with the intervals of the other fluids as specified, although a little bit longer for me.

That is good info there. Guess the only thing I found odd when I bought my truck is there is no light duty/severe duty choice in maintenance schedules for my truck? Heck I was satisfied with getting an extra 2,000 miles out of an oil change since I had always done them every 3,000.
