Exclamation tapping noise question

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum...actually I'm new to Dodge too. My husband and I just bought a 2001 Ram 1500 with about 85k miles on it about a week ago. The engine is making a slight tapping noise and the mechanic is telling us that all Magnums make this noise. Is that true or should we take it to a different mechanic?

Thanks guys!

Welcome to this ForumZ
there are lots of informed people in here & they will gladly share their experience with you
As for your tapping noise, if you use the proper oil viscosity & a quality oil filter, i
recommend a WIX,
i'm not FRAM fan, too much flow restriction & this COULD be what is causing your tapping

any opinions giving in here, are just that..........

The truck is at the dealership right now getting a couple of minor repairs done that should have been done before we bought it, so i won't be able to get a video of it until tomorrow at the earliest.

When we first heard the noise, my husband checked the oil and it was a quart low. He did an oil change (badly needed) to synthetic oil 10W30 with a FRAM filter and that helped reduce noise by at least half. I will tell him about trying the other brand.

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.

Magnum engines are not supposed to make a taping sound. My magnum is very smooth and quiet (within reason of course). If the tapping is coming from the top of the engine, without hearing it I would guess it's the lifters needing adjustment. From below it could be a more serious problem.

The oil being low is a sign that the intake plenum pan gasket is blown, causing oil consumption. The tapping noise is possibly a lifter and if it is, doing the plenum pan and lifters at the same time will save you some $$$.

we were thinking it is the lifters too. its still under a warranty from the dealership and (of course) now they are saying its supposed to make that noise and that the truck was sold "as is". luckily i have a copy of the warranty.

It most certainly not supposed to make any tapping noises. As long as you get the problem documented while the warranty is in effect, they should be obligated to fix it.
