Default 02' 3.7V6 -> 4.7V8 Swap???

Hey everyone, Pat here.

My 02' Ram has a [nice sounding] V6, but i'm interested in seeing how much $, work, and modifications it might take to swap the V6 with a Ram 4.7L V8 from around the same year 02-08. (or maybe the HEMI but for now the smaller V8 would still be a big improvement.)

Compared to the V6, how reliable are the 4.7's? My father has heard "around town" that those have had troubles under normal use, but i'm not sure how accurate that information is.

Is it worth the money? Would i be better off buying another regular cab that already has the V8?

Would only the Engine need swapping? Does the transmission and rear end also need modifying/swapping to fit the bigger engine?

Depending on how things go finically for me in the near future, this may or may not even happen. But incase it does i was wondering if anyone could give me some tips or advice on this subject.

If this V6 area of this forum isn't the best place for this, or if this is a duplicate thread that has been made by someone else before me, i apologize.

Thanks,
Pat.

Your 3.7 is nothing more than a sawed off 4.7. Personally, I think you'd be better off getting a different truck because the transmission and wiring harnesses will have to be swapped as well. Doing the work wouldn't be that difficult but I just can't see it being cost effective.

Thanks,

Physically the 4.7 would be a straight bolt in. 4.7 mounts are factory, so is the 45RFE trans. Your front spring rate might need to be increased to compensate for the increased weight, so would cooling capacity (radiator). Same 9.25 axle under all, if its the same trans then you can probably reuse or get a used correct driveshaft. The headache here is making it all run. You'd need the entire harness out of a donor truck from the PCM on out to hope to make it work. There have been several successful swaps on other forums, including multiple 4.7 to hemi, a 5.9 gas to 5.9 diesel and even a 2002 converted to a stealth SRT-10. If you have the time, willingness and know how (or friends with know how) then it is possible. Otherwise, trade up.
