Default Food for Thought

Just as a side note, I didn’t order the kit from Flowmaster for the install. I called Flowmaster and ordered the tail pipe section only (part number 16419). (You may need part number TB499, the head tube extension, if you are removing the stock muffler for the first time to make it work. I fixed this with the first flowmaster I installed.) They gladly agreed to my request and only charged me around $100.00 for the tail pipes. Originally I wanted to use the 40 series muffler I already had but it was a 3” center inlet with dual 2 ˝” outlets. The “American Thunder” tail pipe section needs to be installed with a side inlet so the hangers line up and the pipes stick out correctly. I could have taken it to the muffler shop and had the head pipe modified or the hanger relocated to make it work but I really didn’t feel like giving them money for basically nothing. I wanted to switch to the 50 HD series anyway and found one on E-Bay for $90.00. The cheapest I found the Flowmaster 17387 "American Thunder" kit was from Amazon for $285.00 or so. I picked up some muffler clamps from my favorite parts store and I was on my way. I saved a few bucks in the process and it was a super easy job.

Awesome, thanks for the pics. I really like it...Read what WaybackInc said, did you need anything other than what it came with? If you do it's no problem I know how to weld and at the Auto hobby shop here on base we have welders

Default Welding

I'm not keen on welding exhaust together. I much prefer clamps, they are more forgiving if you chose to change things in the future. I still think you can assemble this configuration cheaper by parts other than the whole kit. If you are worried about not having what you need to complete the assembly go for the kit. Flowmaster has a wonderful support staff to help if you run into problems. With the kit and a saws all or hacksaw for that matter it shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes or so for the install. A friend once told me a hacksaw builds character. I must be one heck of a character by now!

Ha ha, yea so true. Once I get back from my 3 week vacation starting this weekend I'll order it. I been loyal to flowmaster because their great sounding mufflers so I know it's gonna be good

Well, I'm stationed in Utah so the winters are sometimes bad here but he past 2 have been pretty mild. I know the exhaust system is aluminized steel so I see why they rust, but wouldn't applying some sort of anti rust spray paint like this one http://www.princessauto.com/shop-gar...st-spray-paint Might do the job?

From my experience any painting to your exhaust pipes is a waste of time, it usually burns right off. i haven't tried high heat engine paint? It may work.
