Default Smell of gas, depleted gas mileage (and I don't think it's the air filter)

Title pretty much summed it up, but here's the details.

After replacing the air filter after four hundred miles ago (she's at 96,2XX right now), I started noticing the smell of gas in the cab and a loss in gas mileage. First problem turned out to be the air filter housing (which had come loose after some rough play that weekend), but I keep noticing it even after I fixed the air filter problem.

Is there anything else that could be causing these problems?

Does it happen after you fill up or do you notice it all the time?

Start with the obvious and check the fuel lines and fittings for leaks.

It's a fairly frequent thing. Most obvious after just filling up though.

Reason I asked is I had a similar problem just after I bought my truck. It only happened just after I filled up, so I mentioned it to the dealer at my next service. They did replace the air filter, but (and I'm sure Randy can explain it better) something was blocking one of the lines allowing the vapors to be noticeable in the cab. They cleaned it out and problem gone.

Turns out...none of the above.

The smell of gas turned out simply to be some power steering fluid that had spilled on the floor...and the perception of bad gas mileage was just me getting used to city MPG again after 1000 highway miles.

Don't I feel silly

Appreciate all the help though!

Good to know you don't have a fuel leak that could have led to a fire.
