Question CAI Reality Check

Ok, I'm convinced that IF I get a CAI it will be the Volant.

However, I'm not convinced getting a CAI is the right thing to do based on my driving situation.

My average speed is 35mph. I may take a road trip of a couple hundred miles maybe once a month. I don't haul/pull anything, at least not more than once every couple years. Whatever I carry in the back of the truck can usually be handled by one person, aka not heavy.

So, would the CAI be a worthwhile investment? Right now, I'm thinking it would not be, but would appreciate input from those more knowledgeable on CAI's than I am.

I think it comes down to personal preference. The 4G Ram have a better air box than previous models, and they tend to breathe well, but a little more air in is never a bad thing.

You'll see an increase in performance if you add the CAI, and it'll be the last air filter that you ever buy (of course you could do the same with a drop in filter).

It comes down to if you want the CAI, I don't think that any of us truly NEED it.

just my opinion

You can get 20 new paper drop-ins for the price of a Volant. At 10,000 miles each for the paper, that's 200,000 miles worth of filters,,,, (OOPS! add another 80 bucks to the cost of the Volant for a replacement Powercore at 100,000 miles, or 4 years, whichever comes first)

35 mph average? Never tow? Never race? Never Haul?

IMHO,,, You (and I) have no need for one,,, It won't save you any $$$, won't do you any good putting around at 35 mph, either.

Really it is personal preference. If you want to have a little more performance under the hood then go for it. In my opinion everyone needs one! haha. It will give you a little added MPGs, maybe 1-2 and a little more power. You cant really go wrong with that! Yea they are around $300 but thats not too bad compared to other performance mods.

If you are not planning on getting other mods for some added performance then the CAI might not be worth it. When you add exhaust and tuner to the CAI thats when it really shines.

Personal preference my friend! Do whatever makes you happy, thats what I say!

it also comes down to how you want the truck to feel to get to 35 mph, if you want it peppy and more responsive, and a potential mpg gain, then a cai will work for you.

ALL I did was buy a K & N drop in filter and could tell a small difference. Especially pulling my trailer. I think the purchase of the entire CAI system is a waste of money...unless you want to hot rod.

yup..always the ones who have NEVER tried something that have a well educated opinion on it... I do pull my boat and I have used a drop in before (now that was waste of my money), it is a big difference when I tow with a FULL ON cai...

I wonder if bearwhiz has cam/heads/headers/duel e-cutouts/cat deletes/cai/efan/underdrive crank pulley/ported tb/gears/dsp with custom tune/caltracs ?

In all reality, a CAI on an all stock truck just isn't going to 'perform' to the extent of the exact same CAI on a fully modified truck.

In all due respect, chezfred, your truck is unlike the vast majority of Rams on the road today. What works for you and what's worth it for you and your truck is, at times, not always applicable to the rest of us and our stock/near stock trucks.

The advice is nice, but not always applicable.
