Default Bad mileage? improved by 3.5 mpg for 36 bucks

I just bought my Ram on friday. A 2004 4.7L Quad cab SLT. I left the dealership with a full tank of gas and hit the highway, driving normally, not stomping it to the floor once. Got home after a 52 mile 65mph cruise set the whole time. Pulled in my driveway, 13.5mpg. I checked the air filter, looked horrible. So I drove back over to the auto parts store, got a filter, and new plugs. After looking like an idiot trying to buy plug wires.

Got back to the house and was sitting at 14.1 mpg(with 150 miles on the trip meter). I installed the new plugs and air filter, along with leaving the battery unhooked to reset the computer. Refilled the gas tank to check the trucks computer, My math said 13.95, close enough for my non-exact mechanic.

Me and my wife went to the mall, walmart, and a few other places, about a 75 mile drive. Checked my mpg meter in the drive way, 17.9.

Same driving habits, 25% city 75% highway.

I ordered a K&N Cold Air intake kit, and the truck always has Magna flow 1 into 2 cat back exhaust. Stock sized M&S tires, factory ride height.

damn thats good to know mne always says like 12 sometimes even 10.
but you can reset it without unhooking the battery that way you wont have to reset you clock and radio settings, its to the left and says reset if you hold that it will reset all those numbers

I'm about ready to change my spark plugs. I did a complete Sea Foam treatment to the gas tank, oil system and in the vaccume tube thing. Changed the oil after about 50 miles and ever since my MPG has gone down. Not by much, but enough, so I think the last option are new spark plugs. She has just over 50k on her so it's about time anyway.

Unless you've previously changed them, you're way overdue.

Nice gain. I got about 2 mpg's when I installed my K&N CAI. I'm hoping to get 1 or 2 more with a new exhaust.

BTW, don't worry about the plug wire thing. I think many of us have done that... I know I did

Yeah, changed them last week. All but 2 plugs looked pretty worn down. Put some Champion platnium plugs in and seems to be getting slightly better mpg. Just have to wait a bit longer so I can put the new headers/exhuast in. True duals.
