Default 5.9l engine smokin on startup

i have a 98 ram 2500 5.9l when i start it it has a cloud of white smoke but not every time. was told possibly a head gasket. anyone have an idea could use the help. just bought the truck its my first dodge. thankyou

If it's running right, my first guess would be valve seals. A simple chemical or leak down test would rule out a head and/or gasket problem.

it does run good. while idling it does bouce a little bit but no more then 50 rpms or so. wat kind of test would i have to do or where could i get that done. and thank you for helping.

Find a shop that can do a chemical test for combustion gasses in the cooling system. It shouldn't be too expensive and will tell you if you have anything leaking between the cylinder/combustion chamber and cooling system.
