Default tow/haul or o/d off?

Just curious what everyone uses while driving around town (city driving 30-70km/h) and how fast is too fast to be driving with o/d off?

o/d is primarily for economy at hiway speeds, 88kph or 55mph in the US. Not using it will not hurt the truck at all until you get into the high speeds 80mph or more most likely. At those speeds you'd be putting a lot of stress on the motor. Key is the rpms, watch your tach.

thanks for the input. someone had told me it's hard on the transmission driving around town with the o/d on, always shifting in and out of overdrive. any truth to that?

Yeah, the trans will slip a bit in O/D when driving at low speeds around town, and it goes in and out of O/D with the slightest throttle input.

I don't use mine until I hit freeway speeds and leave it in O/D off mode until I hit those speeds.

What rim/tire do you have and what gears are you running? At those low speeds I don't think your transmission will be doing much gear hunting. Maybe if you do a lot a light throttle to heavy throttle.

At 70km/h (44mph) don't think you will getting into O/D (5th gear). If you have the 20" wheels and a 3.55 then your rpms would be 1060 in 5th gear.

At 60km/h (37.5mph) you def won't be in O/D because your rpms would be 908.

Again, my assumptions are with the 20" wheel and a 3.55 gear.

Maybe someone that knows about the transmission programming and/or shifting will be able to help out some more. But as already stated, you won't hurt anything drving with o/d off at those speeds.

Ive been curious about this too. Ive always drove with O/D on (i think so cause there no lights on the dash on) wether im goinin 25mph or 80mph. Do i need to start pushing the button and putting it in O/D OFF?

if i'm going up or down a hill, 6% grade & i'm behind a heavy semi, i manually shift my tranny, i use 2nd gear a lot here.
manual shifting an automatic doesn't hurt it, so if your in town, you can shift it manually, on my dash read out, it can read:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & then the gear read out disappears, the transmission now shifts to any gear it needs to, including O/D.
O/D doesn't kick in when a gear is displayed on the read out, i don't know about older Rams
