Default Going to look at a Ram

In the market for a truck and found an 05 Ram 1500 SLT with 91k miles at a dealer not far from me. They are telling me they'll add tint and can get it around $7k. Engine is the 4.7 and there seem to be some issues with head gasket leaks. Are these isolated events or is the motor prone to failure? Are there other things I should look at specifically on this truck besides the normal stuff?

Have you gone to look at it, take it for a test drive yet? While I don't see why the 4.7, with proper maintenance, that is, would be any more prone to failure than any other, I'm sure others on here will be able to offer you more specific advice, but good luck and let us know how you make out!

yeah, there are some issues.

First, the head gaskets have been a problem

Secondly, oil circulation passages that seem to plug up have resulted on engine failures. I attribute part of this to poor maintenance.

Third, I've read here and on another forum that many 4.7L buyers are smacking themselves for not getting the HEMI but many of those are people who want to tow more than a small trailer.

But, there are other members here who have had no problems, like the engine, get decent mileage out of them and tow what they need to tow.

If the truck looks good and you can get some service records for it, give it some consideration. Drive it to see if it will get out of its own way.

not getting rid of the 300 just don't want to be putting so many miles on it and would like to be able to have it down for a while for some modding. Need a truck or SUV that I can use as my daily, tow something if I need to, and take out to the ranch during hunting season. the 300 has a problem navigating 8" mud holes

If it's light usage, and the vehicle has been serviced correctly, it should be a good truck.

Totally understand about those 8" mudholes, Daniel.

According to Kelly Blue book, that truck in excellent condition is worth $12,300 retail. The info I used is based on best guess of what the truck actually is.

With known head leaks, I'd shy away from it. You don't know what hidden problems they have caused.

Also, the 4.7 gets worse mileage and much lower power than the hemi. When I bought my brand new 04 SLT I kicked myself for not getting the hemi.

yeah not that concerned about gas mileage or horse power I got the SRT. this is more about function. probably looking at putting ~10,000 miles a year on it. just need to be sure what ever I get will be reliable and this motor seems to have some issues

Yeah, the engine issues were the crux of my post. Replacing that motor can be expensive.
