Default exhaust clamps

Couple quick questions. I have been thinking of replace the stock muffler and deleteing the resonator. Since the 4.7 doesn't have MDS I've come to the conclusion I don't need to worry much about drone.

I've noticed that the muffler appears to be clamped. If I want to try to do this myself, are these clamps removable/reusuable, or do they need to be cut? Also It's an easy swap only if the replacement muffler is the same length as the sock muffler correct. Otherwise what do you do?

Also the resonator is welded. Does this mean that to delete the resonator I need to take it to a shop to get a short peice of pipe welded instead? Not that I want to cobble together a ton of clamped bits, but are there any do it yourself solutions?

Since I'm researching a new project it's time to appeal to the experts once again.

The clamps can be re-used unless you have to cut them off to get them loose. That happens sometimes.

If the replacement muffler is the same length, you should probably be able to slip it right in. It might help to loosen the hangers to give you some wiggle room to slip it in. Don't forget to put them back in place!

Yes, you'll have to replace the resonator length with a short piece of pipe. You can pie cut the edges to slip it in and clamp it but I'd suggest you go to a shop and get it welded in or you may experience some leaks in this area.

If the clamps are about 1 inch wide band type you should be able to reuse them without any problems. The old u-shaped clamps often have to be cut.

I took another look at the clamps. I can see what your both talking about. seem like they will be easy to reuse. The end of the tail pipe was also damaged in the accident I was in and I noticed that the section behind the resonator was not replaces with mandrel bend pipe so it is constricted at the last 45 degree bend. I may ask that the insurance company pay for it to be redone correctly and then just ask the shop to remove the resonator when they fix it.

The muffler I am thinking of going with is quite a bit shorter than the stock muffler however. I guess I'll have to suppliment some pipe there. I also notice that the muffler has hangers welded too it. What do you do about that? Obviously I can remove the hangers with the stock muffler but I can't transfer them to the new muffler. Any solution for something like that?

The shop will weld new hangers on the new muffler.

Just like this:

I see. Well that sort of defeats the DIY portion of my question, but now I know what to expect. I suspected this was something that couldn't be done properly without welding equipment.

Yeah, sorry about that bud. But welding an exhaust system is my preferred method vs. clamping at the pipe junctions.

Even the stock muffler has welded on hangers.

Band type clamps are ok but I don't care for the u type since they're more prone to leaks. A complete cat back system is much easier for the DIY'er since all the hangers are already welded on and clamps would be supplied. A lift makes the install process a lot easier.
