Default Auto hub issue

My 2002 Ram 2500 4x4 is a quad cab with the HO 5.9L diesel and the 6-speed standard. The front axle is a Dana 60. I notice that when the truck is in 2WD, the front diff is still spinning the front drive shaft. Any idea what is causing this? Nobody seems to be able to diagnose what the problem is.

I don't know too much about the auto hubs, so I'll let one of our techs help ya out on that.

Welcome you to the forum,

This forum is full of great looking trucks, and packed with great mod ideas and there are loads of knowledgeable and experienced people here.

I have owned 2 Ram 2500's. An 04 and an 08, both with Dana60 axles. In both cases, the front drive shaft spins with the movement of the truck in 2wd because the front axle is full time live...that is, there are no hubs to unlock, and no axle lock/unlock system. It is the way the HD trucks (2500 and up) are set up.
Now, yours being a 2002, I can't say for sure, but I would guess that it is also full time live, but can't say for sure. Your local dealership 'should' be able to tell you.

AND - We all like pix! Got any to share ?

Enjoy the Z!

Thanks. That's part of the help I needed. I am chasing a vibration problem that manifests at hwy speed. A friend drives a 1 ton dually and when he isn't in 4WD, the front axle doesn't spin. Near as I can tell, it's the same engine, transmission, xfer case combination as what is in my 3/4 ton. He was guessing that my vibration was coming from the front shaft turning at highway speed. I guess I will have to check elsewhere in the drive line.

My 2002 Dodge 2500 has a Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) that splits the passenger side axle in two so that the outer axle turns on the passenger side independent of the inner axle. On the driver's side, the axle is always connected to the pumpkin but doesn't spin the driveshaft because instead it spins the inner passenger axle backwards via the spider gears. A half vast arrangement if ever there was one. On my truck an off road rock dented the CAD unit locking it permanently and causing the driveshaft to always spin. To tell if you have a CAD, look at the passenger side axle tube for a gimo that looks like an old vacuum advance housing with tubes and wires on it. I replaced the whole mess on my truck with a Spintek Freespin kit which included rebuildable hubs, manual lockers and new spindles. Works great and gave me 2 mpg plus.
