Just to clarify - you mean the midshaft bearing on the driveshaft?

Will the whinning noise change when on and off the throttle ? If so check the differential fluid . Is the pinion seal leaking ?

Could it....any thing is possible, but I have yet to hear a carrier bearing sound like that. If you don't have a lot of play in the rear end, you might want to check the pinion bearing. I've done 2 in the last year (Not on Dodges) for that very problem. In both cases there was very little play in the drive shaft, but it was more difficult to turn then normal (hard to turn by hand with wheels off the ground).

Sounds like the pinion bearing going out. If you hear the sound (whinning) on accelarating or coasting, most likely the pinion bearing. And it will be louder as time goes on. Replace mine 18 months ago.

i have about .008" backlash between the pinion & ring gear. it turns pretty freely with the drive shaft. my gear pattern on the ring gear is mostly heel loaded. i'm afraid if i try to draw up on my crush sleeve i might go too far, and have to start all over. i guess the right thing to do is pull the pinion & replace the bearing & crush sleeve. i guess you just reuse the old spacer under the bearing & hope you're in the ballpark. thanks for the info

You're at the limit of your backlash setting. Spec is .005-.008"
