Default Drive vs. 5 on the rocker switch?

Durring some experiments pursuant to my previous post I've noticed something odd. When I'm on the highway (75mph) I run at about 1900rpm when I'm in drive. However if I click the rocker switch down so the dash displays 5 I jump suddenly to 2200rpm. There is no change in speed or engine sound when this happens however and if I switch back up to drive the rpms drop again. I assumed that drive at 75mph is in 5th. Is there a 6th gear I don't know about or an alternate 5th used only in drive?

What's up with that?

its probably locking and unlocking the torque converter. Not an actual gear change.

Technically the 545RFE is a 6 speed transmission but only 5 gears are used through normal upshifting. The extra gear somes into play when you lay into the gas at highway speed; the transmission shifts into an alternate second gear (a true passing gear) and the upshifts back through 3, 4 and 5. I agree with Strang3majik though, you're just unlocking the converter.

Ok .. so I just did a bit of reading. If I understand correctly what you both are saying is that in drive the torque convertor locks at high speed to improve efficiancy. However at 5 on the rocker switch I am unlocking the torque convertor and essentially wasteing energy at the engine now has to run at higher RMP to keep the trany spinning at the same speed?

If this is the case I have one further question. Why would the system be set up this way. What could the advantage possibly be to unlocking the torque converstor at this speed?

I know this is an old post but thought I would correct the info for future searches.

When in ERS Mode the Double Overdrive (Top Gear) is disabled and the the gears are renumbered.

Normal Mode:
1 = 3.00
2 = 1.67
2 Prime = 1.50
3 = 1.00
4 = 0.75
5 = 0.67

ERS Mode:
1 = 3.00
2 = 1.67
3 = 1.50
4 = 1.00
5 = 0.75

makes it easier while taking hills and such by turning mds off, the truck will do it on it's own, but if you keep it in 5 you don't have to worry about it. just like hitting the tow/haul button, it automatically puts it in 5.

Edit* just noticed you have the 4.7...I know nothing about the little v-8s anymore.
