Default 2010 SLT 3.92 rear 5.7 Hemi ? speed?

My 2010 Ram SLT Crew Cab with the 3.92 rear end seems to have 6 gears. It is suposed to have a 5 speed tansmision. When down shifting from D to 5 the RPM drops like I just came out of overdrive. I have 2000 miles on it now and the computer was re-fashed. Maybe they fixed the problem where the computer looses count of the gears. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Technically, your 545RFE has 6 gears. When you stomp the loud pedal, it shifts into a true passing gear (which is an alternate 2nd gear) and unlocks the converter. 4th and 5th are both overdrive gears.

Default Torque Converter CLutch

So, th 5 speed transmission has a torque converter clutch, great. That is probably the cause of the RPM drop. It disengages the clutch when going from D to 5.

Is this right or do I realy have another overdrive gear besides? You mentioned an alternate 2nd passing gear. 2nd seems low for passing unless you realy mean to floor it.

Thanks very much for the help.

I had similar thoughts, but attributed mine 2 the MDS turning off.
Felt like it was shifting out of a phantom 6th gear.

Here are the ratios:

Dodge 5.7L HEMI 545RFE 5 spd
1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1
2nd 1.50:1 (kickdown gear)
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.75:1
5th 0.67:1
Rev 3.00:1

Normal driving will upshift 1-5 but the transmission will use the 1.50:1 2nd gear for downshifting.

It needs to downshift into true 2nd if you're getting on it. 2p is just a tick off 3rd and it doesn't let the engine drive up into the hp as easily as "true" 2nd would imo.

Mine is new, original, never flashed and does the same thing ever since I bought it.

Reflash may be confusing. I meant official DODGE factory computer update.

I purchased my 2010 RAM 1500 Crew Cab, Bighorn Edition, in June 14. It was built in February. If your truck was purchased about the same time, you may need to get the update.

My truck has the 5.7 Hemi and the 3.92 rear end plus 20" tires. Recal also included a front bearing seal replacement.

Mine was built 4/2010, I got it on July 5th, so hopefully the dealer has updated it all, but I'll check on the next visit.

Default Converter Clutch

Checked it out. Yess indeed the 545RFE transmission does have a torque converter clutch. This is what I believe changes the RPM a litle when shifting from D to 5.

Good news.

My last truck was a 1985 GM Siera 2WD Diesel and got 25MPG with the torque converter clutch transmission. Sold it at 100,000 miles. It started to rust. When you loose the battle with rust it is time to give up. I also hated making the wrong decision by not geting the crew cab version in 1985.
