Default A/C compressor comes on with heat on.

Hey guys I have had a weird issue with my A/C system during the winter and wondered if anyone knows what to do. When I am running around in the winter with the heat on, if I switch the selector from floor/defrost to defrost or vent my compressor starts engaging. Still blows hot air, but during the summer with the A/C on properly I get no compressor action. I am going to check all the vacuum connections, does anyone think it could be the selectors bad. Any other ideas would be welcomed, the truck is tore apart so it would be very easy to repair the issue now. Thanks.

That's normal operation. The compressor engages to pull himidity out of the air which aids in defogging the windows.

It sounds to me like you've lost your refrigerant . Even when your refrigerant is gone the a/c compressor will still come on in the "defrost mode" . In the a/c mode , it will not . The refrigerant is what carries the oil through out the system . So if theres no oil being carried through out the system when in defrost mode things are getting damaged due to lack of oil . Make sure the compressor is ok before you do anything . It's best when you know you have a freon leak to just unplug the compressor so you don't ruin it .

Thanks Tom, when I put it all back together I am going to have it vacuumed down and have it checked for leaks. I am also thinking about replacing the expansion valve while it's all apart. I am thinking I may have a shop do the work, I'm not in love with doing A/C work myself. I appreciate the response.

Not a problem . A/C work isn't hard unless you have to dig into the dash . Then it goes bad quickly .
