Default The Dreaded 46RE Trans Trouble

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 with the 46RE and 76,000 miles. When doing a fluid changeout in the trans about 6000 miles ago I found the O/D/Reverse snap ring. I knew a rebuild was inevitable but I thought when it went I would only lose reverse and O/D. Well coming home from West Va. last weekend I seemed to have lost O/D but still had reverse. Then I drove it the next day and it wouldn't shift out of first. Took it to the local shop my mechanic said there was a code for the Torque Converter Clutch(TCC). He called me later and said it was 2 quarts low on tranny fluid and when he took it for a test drive everything seemed fine. I got it back and drove it, still no O/D and driving on the beltway that night at one point there was a loud clunk, and one right after that, then the next day reverse was basically gone and it wouldn't shift out of first again. I took it to another shop and that mechanic says he knows it needs a transmission without even looking at it. Does anyone know if I really need a new trans or can it just be re-built? Or am I lucky enough to just need a new TCC? I doubt...but it would be nice considering a "new" re-manufactured trans from Chrysler is $4500 and the cheapest aftermarket re-manufactured trans is $2300...This SUCKS

as long as the case is good & the valve body is good, it should be rebuildable, i would get a rebuilt torque converter
some transmission guys need side money, if they have a handy air compressor, you may get a deal, they just won't be able to steam clean the parts

too bad it is not the 45RFE, it was called a 4 speed
the same transmission case was used for some 1999 Jeeps first, then it was in several vehicles up to 2011 in the Rams
only difference is recently the transmission was called the 545RFE, it is called a 5 speed there were only software changes

the same transmission will be in the new 2012 Ram 1500, under a different NUMBER,
another software upgrade & a different torque converter will be used

Thanks. I took the truck to a shop today to have it re-built. The mechanic said it should be around $1650; not cheap, but a lot cheaper than having a re-manufactured one installed! And I wish I had a different transmission since I bought the truck I know the reputation of the 46RE.
