Default 4wd not engaging?

Im looking to buy a 97 1500 and the owner is saying that the 4wd does not engage.

This is the email I got from her.

Quote:
The 4wd hasn't worked since last fall. The light would come on sporadically, but it wasn't engaging.
Now this truck is almost 4 hours away from me so I cant really drive up just to crawl underneath and do my own troubleshooting.

Are the transfercases chain or gear driven? If the chain was loose it could cause this but is should still make noise when driving down the road if its that loose. Did dodge do any vacuum disconnect in 97? (I know they did a vacuum disconnect in Jeeps up untill 90-91)

If this is a common issue and I find it by searching I am sorry but I am trying to get an answer asap. (I am searching dont worry)

I think I may have just answered my own question.

Im guessing the CAD (vacuum disconnect on the axle I hate that thing) was not discontinued on the Rams like it was on Jeeps. If thats true I can fix that no problem. I was confused becuase I didnt think that Dodge would be that far behind Jeep considering they were both owned by Chrystler at the time.

For anyone who does not know what I am talking about here are some pictures.

Transfer case switch failure is common and would cause the problem you describe. I'd check it first.

No, vacuum switch on the transfer case that actuates the axle disconnect.
