Default How to Do a Lift Properly

Ok, I've looked through the How To's and didn't see one on this subject, except the one about the 3" body lift. This is for those higher lifts.

I'm no expert on the subject and I'm hoping someone with a lot more knowledge will step in and fill in what I left off.

I have a mechanical background and an engineering background, so I tend to look at things from that perspective.

I've seen a lot of posts about people wanting to lift their trucks for various reasons; big tires, mudding, off-roading, looks (this one usually can be accomplished with the 3" body lift), etc.

Lifting a truck can seem like a simple thing to do. Buy the kit, lift it up, and put the kit in and you're done.

Doing it right is not quite that simple or easy. There is a lot of knowledge and design that needs to be taken into consideration.

Here's some things you need to consider:

1. Will the angle on the u-joints be to steep?
2. Will the drive shafts be long enough after the lift is done?
3. Will the angle on rod ends and the rest of the steering mechanism be to steep?

4. Will the hoses connected to the steering box be stretched to far?
5. Will the steering shaft reach?
6. Do the shocks and springs need to be changed?
7. What will happen when you're off-roading and you end up with one wheel extended fully down, will it rip out everything connected to it?

These are just a few things that come to mind. Not taking them into account can be a costly venture in repairs.

Just because you take your truck to an "off-road" shop to have the work done, don't count on them knowing how to do it correctly. Take a look at some of their work. A sure sign they don't know what they are doing is on a 6" lift the axles are still sitting in the stock position rather than turned up facing the drive shaft (the to steep of an angle on the u-joints comment above).

As I said, I'm sure there are many more things to consider, these are just what comes to mind for me at this time.

I have alot of info. Two categories come to mind. Trucks with solid axle front ends and ones with ifs (independent front suspension). In either case the higher you go the more things will need to be modified. For instance I went from 9" of front lift with a stock steering set up on 37's. The jump to 14" of lift an forties brought on a whole new dynamic of things that needed to be modified.
