Default What is the problem???

Ok guys and gals!!! I own a 2007 Ram Q/C 1500 4x4 w/the 4.7L and auto trans! I currently have the factory 20" rims w/33x12.5x20 Nitto Mud Grapplers!!! The truck has no lift and tires have less than half tread on them! The only mods done to my truck (by the previous owner) is a K&N conical air filter that hangs freely with no airbox, a pcv breather K&N filter and a Flowmaster muffler using factory piping and dumped about 6"s past the muffler!!! Now I know I have a 4x4, etc.., but shouldn't my gas mileage be better than 13.8mpg on it's best day on the highway? I drive around 70 mph and try to keep my foot out of the throttle as much as possible, but what gives??? I have 80k miles on the truck and it runs great!!! I figure changing the tires will definitely make a big difference and plan on going with the Falken "Rocky Mountain A/T" 285/55/20! I do know that my engine/tranny seems to kick in the passing gear more often than say on a Hemi, but that is partly due to engine size and tires!!! So I guess I'm asking what is the normal mileage I should be seeing on highway and why no help from the K&N and muffler? Thanks, Frank!!! Not that it matters, but my truck is the "Big Horn" edition!!!

You have a big, heavy truck with oversized tires a small V-8. Switching to the smaller tires will help but you can't expect a huge improvement. The terms Ram and fuel economy are mutually exclusive.

Those Mud Grapplers are aggressive tires. How far do they stick out past the fenders?

I had a 04 with the 4.7 because I didn't want to pay the extra $$ for the hemi. I kicked myself regularly after making that decision. It was 4x4 too and I drove slower than you with about the same MPG. But I didn't have the big tires.

Yeah, but you can't keep your foot out of the throttle body either.
